Show out an vetoes ewes fensom cu we present to the readers of the CHRONICLE a series of pictures with text showing the ft many and varied steps in preparation of the weekly newspaper for our many readers 1 writing and edlfin al eo the news is phoned mailed handed in or gone out and gotten by mrs athena B cook who writes and makes the final edit of the news 3 1 making the final check r A 41 al 6 addressing the papers al Y man hours have been spent by the staff to bring you this issue of the chronicle and if you are the usual newspaper reader you will spend about 30 minutes reading what we have worked hours to bring you the news of the week in addition to the staff there are many correspondents who have devoted much time to bring you the news of your home locality three steps in making an engraving from a picture 0 va A ar 41 V wy r aw L V above are three of the pidge ridge boys who make our engravings for us in provo engaged in making the cuts for this week s is sue the first picture shows the arc lights and lens in tion for the exposure the middle picture shows another son ex amiling the depth of the etch in making the plate the third pic ture shows still another son sawing and trimming the mounted cut ready for shipment to us partite iTy the he ads have been set up partly by hand and part partly by machine placed in the forms along with the engravings and the news and a proof taken of them on the cylinder press frank S beckwith is cutting paper to back up the engravings that are too low lo w and making them so that they will print to the best possible advantage the engravings are made in provo for us so the pictures have to be mailed there it is estimated that a picture loses 50 of its quality by printing in a newspaper so that good clear sharp prints are the best for us 5 folding the papers P aith with inserts WWI A i 4 Z d L 71 I 1 af eddie and bob are shown here running the folding machine into which eddie feeds one part of the paper and bob feeds in the insert or inside section of the paper the folder is running about 2000 an hour at the time this picture was taken the champ J 41 this is gaylord skoger boe C court at tod rodj park who is the cham pion delivery boy for the chronicle he delivers and sells nearly a week and is hoping to soon better that number after being folded the papers are placed on a low table ready for addressing which is being done by frank A beckwith each paper going thru the mails malls is stamped with the addressee s name and address tied into bundles for each town and turned in to the post office where there are less than b subscribers in a town the papers are single wrap ped with a piece of paper rolled around the single copy of the paper with the address on the cover on the table in the foreground together with those on the bench are 1500 copies of the tooele thoele county chronicle those that are for carriers are not addressed but are boxed for shipment to tooele thoele leaving delta at I 1 10 p m and on a high percentage of the doorsteps in tooele thoele by 5 p m that same afternoon tb BB 2 setting aisig the mews news into type 4 A robert bob riding who sets the news up in type on the the regular body type of the newspaper takes 9 lines to an inch and the machine turns out 7 lines a minute at top speed so every 7 lines of the paper have required 1 minute of bob s time providing the machine is working in good order and there have been no stops or mt int eruptions for minor adjustments and changes of copy the type aetis set is then proof read and is now ready for placing in the forms bob is a veteran of the navy air corps 4 the final press run 1 44 oe JA I 1 01 WA 19 MMA eddie moms manis is shown here running the cylinder press which is printing two pages at one time the press is running about 1450 copies an hour one paper has just left eddie s hands and arid started on the way to be printed another has just come off the cylinder and the one in the foreground is being delivered to the stacking tacking table eddie is a veteran of the army air corps 7 part of the tooele thoele carriers jo IW U 4 I 1 the earners carriers take them over and here we have a part of them pictured they are left to right kenneth daly bobby phillips don phillips cardon woodward joe lindholm jessie shields nancy shields cal perkins joyce kirk wesley D bush who will manage the chronicle while mrs cook is in delta not present when the picture was taken were joe labadie bobby swan john shuler don skinner jc jee e caldwell joe carlson and ken bates our circulation manager who is we well 11 to tooele thoele coll county nty residents 06 V v w |
