Show Strawberry Days Grand Marshals Named . i - Man f : ', i 1 I i - ' ' ! S 1 . ''' by Mary Burgin The Grand 1 Marshals Mar-shals for 2013 are Anne West Fisher and Jeniel Judd Fugal. Jeniel Judd Fugal has had a very busy and productive life not only raising 12 children, but also with her many contributions contribu-tions to her church as well as Strawberry Days over the years. She was born in 1931 in Lakev-iew, Lakev-iew, Utah to Daniel Ray Judd and Lila Steele Judd. She moved to Pleasant Grove as a young girl. She married Grant Fugal in 1951 in the Salt Lake Temple. They had a happy, loving lov-ing marriage until his death in 2010. Her grandson, Scott Fugal, Fu-gal, remembers the community as well as her family gathering gather-ing around her in June to help decorate the Third and Sixth Ward floats. All of her family members participated in decorating deco-rating the float. Close friends of Jeniel, including Emilie Sanderson, Sander-son, George Smith, Lee Brown, Anita Young, Betty Mitchell, Lois Tervort, and June Monson were also involved. Many of these floats won awards over the years. Scott also said that his grandmother is the best and fastest "strawberry topper" that helps him each year with the huge task he is in charge of for the celebration. He said she brings several of her friends and family, and they just visit and quickly get the job done! If you ask Jeniel what her favorite calling in the LDS Church is, she will say being a Guide Patrol leader. Over the years, she helped dozens of boys along the scouting path toward their Eagle Scout award. She was also a 4-H leader when her older daughters and their friends wanted to have a group and needed a leader. As a camp director for many years, Jeniel's daughter said that she was the only person per-son they knew of that could organize or-ganize silly girls into digging a turkey pit and pulling off a turkey tur-key dinner for Bishopric night (at camp)that rivals Thanksgiving. Thanksgiv-ing. Jeniel was very involved with her children's schools. She was- a room mother for many of her children's classes. She made all of the band uniforms for the high school in the 1980's. She also made countless costumes for plays. Her children could always depend on her attendance at their sporting events. She has also been involved in planning and carrying out school class reunions re-unions for her 1949 graduating class from PGHS. The Fugal house has been the gathering place for the entire neighborhood and its activities. Everyone was always welcome and the doorbell rang constantly. Jeniel's daughters said she loves to draw, paint, decorate and create. cre-ate. They said she was always wanting to improve herself. She was also an excellent seamstress, seam-stress, and could copy about any ready-made outfit her daughters could show her. She has always loved to be in the outdoors, especially white water rafting. She also loves to camp, hike and be with her family fam-ily in these setting. She loves to ski. Jeniel's family considers her, "Wonder Woman!" They say she is the most patient, loving, lov-ing, selfless and Christ-like person per-son they know. They added they are proud to be her daughter. Anne West Fisher was born and reared in Pleasant Grove, the daughter of Vane and Avis West. She is a 4th-generation resident of Pleasant Groveher great-grandparents, Christian & Hannah Fugal and David & Amelia West were some of the earliest settlers of the area. Anne loves Pleasant Grove and values the city's heritage and history. She completed all her schooling in Pleasant Grove and remembers going to kindergarten in the old Tabernacle. She graduated gradu-ated from Pleasant Grove High School and values the deep and lasting friendships she experienced experi-enced there as well as the association associ-ation she has had with the many good people of the community. Photo courtesy of Calvin Walker Anne is the wife of James Fisher and the mother of ten children (nine living). Her children chil-dren were also raised in Pleasant Grove. Anne enjoys being involved in-volved in the community. She has helped on committees for Heritage Days and the Summer Concert Series. She has been a member of the Pleasant Grove Lion's Club for many years, and currently serves as treasurer and chairman of the Community Calendar Fundraising Project. She is also co-captain of the Mahogany Camp of the Daughters Daugh-ters of Utah Pioneers. Music has been very important impor-tant in Anne's life. She began playing the piano for others at the age of ten, and has played at numerous funerals and church gatherings since she was thirteen thir-teen years old. When her children chil-dren were at home she often accompanied them as they sang at parties and programs. Cur rently, Anne plays the organ at the Mount Timpanogos Temple a couple of times a month. As an active member of The LDS Church, Anne has held many music callings as well as serving as a teacher, Relief Society president, pres-ident, and Primary president. Anne worked for the Alpine Al-pine School District, retiring in 2002 after more than 27 years in their employ. She has had a number of difficult challenges in her life, including being left as a single mother with six children chil-dren at the age tof 30, and caring car-ing for her husband, Jim, after he suffered two serious strokes. Despite this, she continues to have a positive outlook on life and a desire to serve others. |
