S 1 ''' by Mary Burgin The Grand Mar-shals for 2013 are Anne West Fisher and Jeniel Judd Fugal. Jeniel Judd Fugal has had a very busy and productive life not only raising 12 children, but also with her many contribu-tions to her church as well as Strawberry Days over the years. She was born in 1931 in Lakev-ie- Utah to Daniel Ray Judd and Lila Steele Judd. She moved to Pleasant Grove as a young girl. She married Grant Fugal in 1951 in the Salt Lake Temple. They had a happy, lov-ing marriage until his death in 2010. Her grandson, Scott Fu-gal, remembers the community as well as her family gather-ing around her in June to help decorate the Third and Sixth Ward floats. All of her family members participated in deco-rating the float. Close friends of Jeniel, including Emilie Sander-son, George Smith, Lee Brown, Anita Young, Betty Mitchell, Lois Tervort, and June Monson were also involved. Many of these floats won awards over the years. Scott also said that his grandmother is the best and fastest "strawberry topper" that helps him each year with the huge task he is in charge of for the celebration. He said she brings several of her friends and family, and they just visit and quickly get the job done! If you ask Jeniel what her favorite calling in the LDS Church is, she will say being a Guide Patrol leader. Over the years, she helped dozens of boys along the scouting path toward their Eagle Scout award. She was also a 4-- H leader when her older daughters and their friends wanted to have a group and needed a leader. As a camp director for many years, Jeniel's daughter said that she was the only per-son they knew of that could or-ganize silly girls into digging a turkey pit and pulling off a tur-key dinner for Bishopric night (at camp)that rivals Thanksgiv-ing. Jeniel was very involved with her children's schools. She was- - a room mother for many of her children's classes. She made all of the band uniforms for the high school in the 1980's. She also made countless costumes for plays. Her children could always depend on her attendance at their sporting events. She has also been involved in planning and carrying out school class re-unions for her 1949 graduating class from PGHS. The Fugal house has been the gathering place for the entire neighborhood and its activities. Everyone was always welcome and the doorbell rang constantly. Jeniel's daughters said she loves to draw, paint, decorate and cre-ate. They said she was always wanting to improve herself. She was also an excellent seam-stress, and could copy about any ready-mad- e outfit her daughters could show her. She has always loved to be in the outdoors, especially white water rafting. She also loves to camp, hike and be with her fam-ily in these setting. She loves to ski. Jeniel's family considers her, "Wonder Woman!" They say she is the most patient, lov-ing, selfless and Christ-lik- e per-son they know. They added they are proud to be her daughter. Anne West Fisher was born and reared in Pleasant Grove, the daughter of Vane and Avis West. She is a resident of Pleasant Groveher Christian & Hannah Fugal and David & Amelia West were some of the earliest settlers of the area. Anne loves Pleasant Grove and values the city's heritage and history. She completed all her schooling in Pleasant Grove and remembers going to kindergarten in the old Tabernacle. She gradu-ated from Pleasant Grove High School and values the deep and lasting friendships she experi-enced there as well as the associ-ation she has had with the many good people of the community. Jeniel Fugal and Ann Fisher were presented at the Miss Pleasant Grove Pageant as the 2013 Strawberry Days Grand Marshals by Strawberry Days by Chairperson Betty Memmott. Photo courtesy of Calvin Walker Anne is the wife of James Fisher and the mother of ten children (nine living). Her chil-dren were also raised in Pleasant Grove. Anne enjoys being in-volved in the community. She has helped on committees for Heritage Days and the Summer Concert Series. She has been a member of the Pleasant Grove Lion's Club for many years, and currently serves as treasurer and chairman of the Community Calendar Fundraising Project. She is also of the Mahogany Camp of the Daugh-ters of Utah Pioneers. Music has been very impor-tant in Anne's life. She began playing the piano for others at the age of ten, and has played at numerous funerals and church gatherings since she was thir-teen years old. When her chil-dren were at home she often accompanied them as they sang at parties and programs. Cur rently, Anne plays the organ at the Mount Timpanogos Temple a couple of times a month. As an active member of The LDS Church, Anne has held many music callings as well as serving as a teacher, Relief Society pres-ident, and Primary president. Anne worked for the Al-pine School District, retiring in 2002 after more than 27 years in their employ. She has had a number of difficult challenges in her life, including being left as a single mother with six chil-dren at the age tof 30, and car-ing for her husband, Jim, after he suffered two serious strokes. Despite this, she continues to have a positive outlook on life and a desire to serve others. "Cteney" continued from Page 3 the city pops a leak for us in the waterline. The nice man in fishing gear who turned the water off for us informed us that the leak was on the property owner's side of the line. Then he shook his wet self on me like my dog, Meg. All for free. No "Yellow Submarine" for those of us on hold. The next song, however, is the love theme from "Poseidon Adventure." I love Shelley Winters in that movie. "In the water, I am a very skinny girl." Good stuff. How on earth would I have ever done this several years ago with one land line? Especially where, today, that same land line is now underwater? "Yes, I would like a water heater," I say on the last call. "Like, a normal water heater?" she says. "Yes. Give me the price for a normal, gas, cold water heater with nothing extended one that holds water and is fine in an earthquake but not in a tsunami and, yes, I know my name is weird. Hello?" A cheesy version of "Smoke on the Water" plays through the receiver for those who wait. They were entertaining and captured the audience as they were like scattered chick-ens trying to be organized. One little girl made everyone smile as she pretended to look through binoculars to find her family as the other girls all left the stage. Artistic Expression was next, accounting for 35 of their total score. The audience witnessed vocal performances, dance numbers, piano pieces, a marimba piece, a violin song, and a guitar piece. The con-testants were judged on a lot of criteria such as stage presence, technical skills, and entertain-ment quality. After this section was over, all the girls got to show "PGHS" continued on Page 6 |
