Pleasant Grove High School Wrestling Team picked up an unprecedented third consecutive State Title at UVU in March. ' Photo courtesy of PichhKid.com The road from November to February seems like a short amount of time to achieve a dream of taking a third straight 5A State Championship. The 2012-2013 Pleasant Grove Wrestling Team, or Team 315 as they call themselves, had a dream. The team wanted their third straight and fifteenth overall over-all wrestling title. Under the direction di-rection of Coach Brock Moore they started the season with over five complete teams. Each weekend two busses would travel to two different tourna ments somewhere in Utah and carry wrestlers. The key to Pleasant Grove's success is a deep quality team of wrestlers that Coach Moore constantly pushes. The team went 9-1 at the Millard Ironman Duals, Undefeated Un-defeated at the Wasatch Duals, placed in the top ten of the elite Reno Tournament, Undefeated at- the Skyview Duals, and the list goes on. It all led to the State Tournament in February. Qualifying Quali-fying 20 wrestlers for the tournament tour-nament shows just how deep, the team goes. Landon Gates, 120 lbs, placed 3rd, Josh Anderson, 138 lbs, placed 5th, Bailey Carlson, Carl-son, 152 lbs, placed 3rd, Taylor Davis, 152 lbs, placed 6th, Austin Aus-tin Taylor, 220 lbs, placed 3rd, and Michael Grace, 285 lbs, placed 3rd. The whole team's point contribution and effort was necessary to win the championship. cham-pionship. With the team State Championship locked up, seven sev-en individual Vikings went on to the finals to seek individual State Champion titles. Of seven wrestlers six competed in the All Star Matches and won. Ben Anderson started everyone off with a state title as a Freshman at 106 lbs. Ky-son Ky-son Levin defended his weight to pick up his second championship champi-onship at 113 lbs as a Sophomore, Sopho-more, Bronson Young kept things going winning at 132 lbs. Then Bridger Cutler came up against his Goliath, Ken Astle, a two time state champion cham-pion defeating our own Josh Jones the year previous in the state tournament. Bridger was down 9-1 in the beginning of the 3rd period when Coach Moore told him to throw it. Those who have watched Bridger wrestle since he was six years old, understood a headlock was coming. Bridger Bridg-er has an almost un-defendable, left-handed head throw. Not once, not twice, but throwing it five times in the third period, peri-od, Bridger Cutler claimed his title and the fourth for Pleasant Grove. TJ Wind, wrestling at "ChantDs" continued on Page 2 "Cliamps " continued front Page 1 160 lbs, struggled in the middle of the season and then dropped a weight where he sealed the 5th title. At 220 lbs, Brandon Den-nison Den-nison went against Roy Nash with a record of 41-0. He came away with a 2nd place finish. Zach Dawe concluded the state tournament with an individual title at 285 lbs. The team won by 96 points over their closest competition, Syracuse. Coach Moore was awarded award-ed Coach of the Year and the coaches honored Bridger Cutler Cut-ler as the Most Outstanding Wrestler. Of course, there's more to the team than titles. All the wrestlers make sure that team mates, like Fernando Cabana who is blind, and others not competing in the tournament but helped train, are in the picture pic-ture of the championship. The feeling and environment of Viking Vi-king brotherhood that Coach Moore instills is long lasting last-ing and deeply embedded in : them all. Together Team 3 1 5 achieved their dream. |
