The position was opened after LaMar Richins, who was head of the Public Works Department, took treatment for and subsequently passed away from a malignant brain tumor in July. Mark Offret held the interim position while an Administrator was being sought Thirty-fiv- e applicants applied for the position according to Brian Bellamy, Human Resource Director for the county, who said Kallahan had all the right qualifications," adding he should be a real asset for the county." The position has been changed from its previous role in that the commission board felt it was time to take a different approach. The new administrator will take over managerial, administrative and supervisory duties related to planning, organizing, directing and coordinating the Public Works Department along with added departments which include: Animal Control, Engineering, Solid Waste and Landfill, Public Transit, and Roads. As the Public Works Administrator, Callahan will serve as liaison to the public, local and state agencies, and to effect public relations and cooperative solutions to common problems and goals. He will also direct overall departmental public relations activities and respond to public concerns and inquiries. The new administrator will also be monitoring federal programs, and assure receipt of entitlements such as highway tax and other programs. Also, manage and maintain interlocal contracts and agreements related to all divisions under his responsibility. A resident of Summit County, Callahan lives in the Park City region where he currently serves as the Assistant Director for Community Development for Provo City. While there, he managed the approval process of Provo's Transportation Master Plan and worked with neighborhood revitalization. Reasoning behind the request came when phone volume calls for lodging fell off about 5(W and according to Malone the move is part of a safety precaution designed to move toward welcoming future destination visitors and away from Olympic Celebrations. The planned celebration efforts would have used the $35,000 received and joined with $25,000 from each of the three ski resorts in the county in a massive two day fireworks spectacular set off from all three mountain areas Feb. 6 and 7 prior to the Olympic Games opening ceremony. With the support of the county commission board, the money will now go toward a marketing campaign designed to target the west coast, particularly Southern California. Malone stated the advertising campaign would not take place right now due to the state of affairs of the nation and working on the Olympics, but would be designed to bring tourists into the area after the games when it could all be tied into "snow." "We realize that right now is not the right time to make a big push." With many people feeling a type of unrest never know n before and with the Winter Olympic Games coming to our state and county every step that can be taken in the line of safety measures is embraced with open arms.
