Show O Prisoners Hide Hacksaw Blades in New "Death Row' CeSSs. Warden Savs That some of the inmates at the state prison believe in long range planning was made evident evi-dent this week when Warden A. O. Severson discovered four hacksaw blades hidden in death row cells at the new point of the Mountain priison. Although the segregation cell block was completed it is not scheduled for occupation before next September. Behind Ventilators The blades were cached behind be-hind ventilator screens in four different cells in 'he prison's 028-cell segregation b!o:;k. Housed there will be the most dangerous convicts, including convicted murderers awaiting execution. Warden Severson said he discovered dis-covered the escape tools while on an inspection tour of construction con-struction at the Point-of-the-Mountain prison site. Checks Shafts He was checking vcntila'ov shafts to see if they could be used as a possible means of smuggling cigarets into the ce'ls when he found a blade behind one screen. A thorough check of the rest of the cells revealed three more. The warden declared that every cell and every corridor will be given an inch--by-inch check before prisoners are transferred to the new prison, probably about next September Take Xo Chances "We can't take any chances. These man are desperately clever. We'll look for things painted into the walls, taped under window sills, hidden in electric sockets or a hundred other places," he declared. "Then we'll lock the place up until the men actually move in." Warden Severson said hi had no idea when the hacksaw blades were hidden or by whom "Trusty prisoners working at the prison farm out there used to have access to the building Seme of them probably hid tl e blades," the warden dec lared. "They' aren't allowed near the plsve anymore," he added. |
