Show LDS Primary Begins Birthday Penny Drive For Childrens' Hospital During February, LDS Promary officers and teachers will make a house to house canvass of the city inviting citizens to contribute one penny for each birthday to assist in maintaining the LDS Childrens' Hospital in Salt Lake City. The "Birthday Penny" idea was inaugurated in 1922 and the collections col-lections have grown steadily until they now help to care for the children at the hospital day and night. More pennies will bo needed to maintain the new Primary Children's Hospital now nearing completion, it is reported. The new hospital is located in a most appropriate site, out of the smoke and noise and where the children may benefit from the sunshine, Primary officers state. In 1911, a movement began in behalf of children who, through no fault of their own, were suffering and handicapped, because of physical phys-ical defects. At that time there were no hospitals or special institutions insti-tutions for children in this inter-mountain inter-mountain country, and special cases were sometimes sent to distant dis-tant cities for treatment. In the beginning, the work was only carried out as an adjunct to the Dr. Groves L. D. S. Hospital Hos-pital but in 1922 the L.D.S. church provided the fine old home on North Temple street where over 5000 ill or crippled youngsters have not only received hospital care but amusement, instruction and therapy work during months of convalesence. Thirty-five of Utah's leading doctors, dentists and specialists give freely of their talents and time. Help is not limited to L. D. S. children. Any child under twelve years of age needing care is welcome wel-come regardless of creed. When a child says that the happiest time of his life has been spent at the Primary Childrens' hospital, you may well know that it is a worthwhile place to be. During 1949 and 1950 ten children from Kolob L. D. S. stake had the opportunity op-portunity of receiving care at this hospital. |
