Jered Johnson received the Employee of the 3rd Quarter 2009 award. Jered was nominated by his peers for the new role he has successfully taken on in the City's development process. Jered has been the City Surveyor for almost two years and before his promotion to this position, Jered functioned as a GPS Technician. Jered has helped to develop the City's Global Positioning Satellite surveying system. Jered works on many projects with far-reaching affects in multiple departments and developments in the City. Working for many different departments can be difficult, but Jered manages the load and responsibilities well. In addition to City projects, Jered has demonstrated an ability to work well with the development community while still protecting the community's interests. Karen Bradford received the Employee of the 4th Quarter 2009 award. Karen was nominated by her peers for her tireless devotion to the City and the Parks and Recreation Department. Karen managed the Recreation Division with all their many programs and offerings. Karen not only manages the division, but she rolls up her sleeves and works along side ail the employees, leading by example. Karen takes on any assignment given to her. She has been given new assignments, new programs to manage, and new budgets to track; adding this to what she has done previously, she finds a way to give each new assignment the same expertise and care for which she is already known. These employees are valued assets of the City. We recognize and honor them for their accomplishments and great service to the community. Spanish Fork City was awarded additional grant monies for its Spanish Fork River Reclamation and Trail Project. Since 2006, Spanish Fork City has been working on the Spanish Fork River Trail, which will eventually connect the Canyon View Park and the Sports Park with a 10-foot wide asphalt trail. This money has come from grants through the National Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) that is a part of the US Department of Agriculture. In 2006, Spanish Fork was first awarded $450,000 to begin this project. Since receiving this first grant, the City received $285,000 in 2008; $275,500 in 2009; and another $275,500 in 2010 for a total of $1.28 Million. During the past four years, city staff have been working with local land owners to acquire easements along the river, conduct a flood-plain study and conduct an environmental impact study. With all these pieces now in place, construction can begin. Bidding for this project is estimated to occur by May, 2010, with construction to begin shortly there- Thalian Club The Thalian Club met on Wednesday, Feb. 3 at the Prestwitch Farms restaurant. President Mary Webster greeted everyone and invited Carol Beck to introduce her special guests, Mr. and Mrs. Duane Hiatt, and the program. Ann Tuttle reported that Betty McVey is still not feeling well enough to attend the meetings and several of the members were excused due to illness. President Webster led them in the Pledge and Ruth Leifson offered a word of prayer and blessing on the food. After having lunch, they were entertained by Mr. and Mrs. Hiatt with music and spo- m ken word — reminiscing about President Lincoln, his election and term in office, with regard to his personality, the civil war and the fight for freedom in our country. The music and spoken word were very touching and thought provoking with regard to the things that are taken for granted today. Both Mr. and Mrs. Hiatt are very accomplished musicians and offered music in song and instrumental on the piano and guitar. They provided a pleasant and delightful program for all in attendance. The next Thalian Club meeting will be held on March 3, 2010. The first phase of the trail will be constructed from Canyon View Park, 3300 East Powerhouse Road, westward toward Spanish Fork Main Street, and will end at or near Poplar Lane. This phase will also include four bridges that will cross the river, giving greater access to the trail. It is estimated that construction will be completed by the spring of 2011. The trail will serve a dual purpose: enjoyment for the public and river corridor maintenance. The eventual trail will run about four miles and provide breathtaking scenery and exercise for those that run, walk or ride on the trail. In addition, this trail will give crews easier access to the river corridor for much-needed maintenance on the river channel. This maintenance will help prevent the buildup of trees and debris that can clog the channel in high water flows and cause flooding in the surrounding areas. Spanish Fork City wishes to thank Senator Bob Bennett and the NRCS for these grants and for their participation in this project during the past few years.
