Show -N E W S- Spanish Fork Covering what matters most Milestone WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 27, 2008 • A5 Kiwanis honors Scouts Courtesy photos / Eugene Colledge DeeAnn, Darrell Ries Darrell Gene Ries met DceAnne Crump in 'Spanish Fork Jr. High. He was 16 years old and Dee Anne Was 14 years old. They started dating, then Darrel turned 17 and joined the army. DeeAnne waited for a him to return. After two years, his enlistment was over (after spending that time in Germany). He then re^enlisted just before he married DeeAnne on Aug. 28, 1958. They took"5the train to New Orleans, where they honeymooned. They were blessed with two children while there: Russell Gene, bom April 9, 1959 and Cynthia born Dec. 22 1960.1 did get to go home for Christmas. We lived in New Orleans for 3 years; Darrell was stationed at Camp Leroy Johnson, La. He spent two months on maneuvers right after we moved there in a 1 bedroom duplex. Then Darrell was sent to Fort Carson, Kansas. I learned to cut hair in New Orleans. We got to go to Mardi Gras, and it was very colorful and a bit scarey. Kansas was nice and we made friends in both places. We lived in Manhaten, Kansas, for three years, and Darrell was sent to Camp Macoy, Wisconsin for 6 months. Then back to Kansas for 3 years. Then Darrell got orders to go to Vietnam, he went in Sept. 1965 and came back in Dec. 1967; he had orders to go to Ft. Lee, Virginia. This Is when Darrell got out of the Army in April 1968. We went back to Utah. Then Darrell got a job in Civil Service, March of 1972. While we were living in Kansas, our daughter Cheryl Jayne was born on July 7, 1963, and it was so hot and muggy we thought we would melt. Cheryl was born 3 1/2 weeks late. Darrell got a job at Dugway and we got to go live there. We really enjoyed it, then Civil Service sent Darrell to Ft. Carson, Colorado for 16 years. While we were there all three of the children graduated; from church seminary, high school, and some good college. Graduated from college with a a degree in commercial art. Mom capped in sewing factories and sewing shops. Then Civil Service sent Darrell to Dugway, which was closer to home in Palmyra. We've seen a lot of the U.S.A. Dan-ell's Mother was living in Portland, Oregon and we would go with her. But there's nothing like home and the friends here. Our daughter Cheryl, wanted us to go to Hawaii, but she died three years ago from poor health, but her life insurance gave us enough money to go. Her passing was a blessing, she no longer has to suffer. We ask for no presents, and we are just having a family party. We love the rest of you. I am surprised that we made it for 50 years. KIWANIS HONORS BSA: On Aug 20, the Kiwanis Club presented $100 to each of the best scouting units in Palmyra District. Top Cub Pack was a combination of Pack 871 and 78.
