To qualify, students had to have a GPA of 35 or higher. Michelle Orton DFJH On the Jan. 21 and 26, 2010 ninth grade honors orchestra students from Diamond Fork Junior High joined with other local junior high schools for an honors orchestra concert. Dr. Dabcynzski, an accomplished violist and wellknown conductor, attended the concert and spent time teaching the students. He taught them a variety of pieces including one he wrote entitled "Crossroads." This piece was written in honor of the con- tinental railroad meeting in Utah. These students were the first to ever perform this piece, and they felt honored. For these ninth graders students of DFJH it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and a chance to make friends while playing their hearts out. Brockbank Courtesy photos FARM LIFE: Jane B. Nelson, representing the Farm Bureau, came to Brockbank Elementary to read "Cattle Kids" by Cat Urbigkit to Mrs. Laurel Koyle's second-grade class. Mrs. Nelson told the students about working on a family cattle ranch. In the book, cowgirls and cowboys take part in many aspects of livestock operations, from calving and branding to haying and rounding up the herd. Mrs. Nelson's son, Frank, showed the students the brand they use on their farm and told them why it's important for the calves to have a brand. He brought some of the food that calves eat and explained each one of them to the students. The students then went outside to see and pet a two-day-old calf. Pictured with Frank Nelson are Emmalee Norman, Adiah Olsen, Nicholas Ete, Madison Wetzel and Monica Escamilla. 100 DAYS: Brockbank Elementary recently celebrated "100 Days of School!" First-graders used the number 100 in math skills like counting and place value; they wrote down 100 words that they have learned how to read and write this year; they drew pictures of what they would look like if they were 100 years old; and they named 100 things you can eat and 100 things you cannot eat. Students also decided if they have $100 what they would spend it on. First-graders also celebrated 100 day by pretending to be the "Serviceable Sweet Candy Company". They counted and bagged 100 treats and delivered those treats around the school and sang "Happy 100 Day, to You!" Pictured is Mrs. Marcy Noorda and her first-grade class showing off their 100 day glasses. SPIRIT WEEK: Jan. 25-29 was "Spirit Week" at Brockbank. Spirit Week is celebrated in January to commemorate Brockbank's birthday. Each day there was a different theme for the students and staff to dress up to show their school spirit. Monday was "Happy Feet Day" — students wore slippers and silly socks to school; Tuesday was "Swap Day" — students had the opportunity to dress up like teachers and teachers dress up like students; Wednesday was "Crazy Hair Day" — students used their imaginations to fix their hair in crazy ways; Thursday was "80s Day" — students dressed up like students did in the 1980s; and then to finish up the week, Friday was "Spirit Day" — students wore their school t-shirts to unite and show how much spirit Brockbank Elementary has. Pictured, left to right, showing off their crazy hair are third-graders, Paige Tomadakis, Bella Cluff, Sage Wing and Amanda Mitchell. * |
