Show Spanish Fork Covering what matters most Sterling Scholar going to State WEDNESDAY, MARCH 5, 2008 • B5 Dance Showcase Josie Osborn SFHS Spanish Fork High School's Jessica Warr has recently been selected as a Regional Sterling Scholar in the category of Speech and Drama. She started out by selecting which of the 13 categories of the Sterling Scholarship she wanted to take part in. She then sent in her application to be one of our Spanish Fork High School Sterling Scholars. - When she received that recognition, Jessica then went on to compete in the Central Utah region of the Sterling Scholar program, which took place at Provo High School. Fifty students from all different high schools were selected to compete within each division, where each student gave the judges and interviewers a two-minute speech/presentation and a ten minute interview. Jessica prepared a 20page portfolio to represent all of her scholastic and life accomplishments for her personal interview. Five fina]ists were chosen from each of the different Sterling Scholar categories to go on to the State competition, which Jessica Warr takes place March. Jessica is one of the finalists, and she now has the opportunity to take part in the State portion of the competition at Alta High School. "It's quite an honor," said Jessica. "It really is a privilege to represent our school in such a well known function and scholarship opportunity as this is." Jessica plans to attend B YU to achieve her Political Science Degree after which she would like to go to Harvard to attain her law degree. Her dream career would be to sit on the Supreme Court or to run for some sort of political office. Courtesy photo DANCE, DANCE REVOLUTION: The Spanish Fork High School Dance Company is hosting the eighth annual "Dance Showcase 2008" on Tuesday, March 1 1 , at 7 p.m. in the SFHS Auditorium. In addition to performances by the SFHS Dance Company, seven other dance studios from the Spanish Fork/Salem area will have students participating in the event: Academy of Dance Performance, Central Utah Stars, Dance Central, Dance Connection, Esprit De Corps, Heart & Soul, and Turning Point. This will be a fun filled evening with many styles of dance. Tickets will be sold at the door. Single tickets prices are $5 adults, $3 students or $15 for an immediate family pass. Come out and support your area's dancers! SFHS honor band competes Shala Richards SFHS Lacey Godfrey, a member of the Spanish Fork Band, was nominated to compete in honor band. Honor band consists of about ten students elected from each school to compete with other schools around Utah. She was chosen to play the drums, and they have many rehearsals and practices to get them ready for upcoming performances. She was extremely excited to be chosen and is thrilled about all the opportunities that band has brought her. "Being in band was one of the bet choices I have made," said Godfrey. "I have been recognized for my skills, made a lot of friends, and if I am accepted 1 can have most of my college tuition paid through a music scholarship. Band is a huge part of my life and I love being involved in it." Josie Osborn STAFF WRITER The Spanish Fork High School art students recently went on a field trip to Weber State University. The trip was conducted by Mrs. Roberts and Mrs. Gardiner. Eighteen students went to Weber State to participate in different art workshops, such as pin hole photography, portrait drawing, print making on linoleum, finger drawing, computer graphics and found object sculptures with Joseph Cornell. These The other guys' low price... is our everyday price different workshops were taught by different artists and art teachers. After they had their lunch, the students were able to meet with representatives from many Utah colleges to learn more about scholarships and the different programs that each college offered relating to the field of the arts. Many of the seniors who attended the workshops also brought portfolios to show prospective colleges and some were even offered the chances for scholarships because of their great talents shown by their work, as well as their positive academic skills. Mrs. Roberts and Mrs. Gardiner explained that it was a good opportunity for seniors to talk to different colleges and to be able to see what their future might have in store for them. The teachers told us that they also enjoyed seeing the students presenting their work and learning more about their individual interests and passions. Mrs. Roberts exclaimed, "It was a good day!"
