Little Weston Richraan, twoyear-old son of Jeramie and Cheyanne Richman, died after being accidently run over at his home. Graveside services were held in Orem on Saturday, Nov. 10. Our whole community grieves with the Richmans at the loss of this happy, precious little boy. Our thoughts and prayers are with them at this sad time. ••• Correction from last week's column: It was erroneously reported that Angie Davis was sustained as the Primary secretary in Benjamin 1st Ward. Instead, the Primary secretary is Becky Davis. Sorry for the error. ••• As we have just observed Veteran's Day, we would like to join in saluting the men and women who have served in the military through various conflicts in past years. We have a number of them living among us in Benjamin who served in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and, most recently, in the current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. We owe them a great debt of gratitude and should never forget their service. Thank you, veterans, thank you! ••• Benjamin's 1st Ward Relief Society's Super Saturday that turned into Wacky Wednesday took place on Nov. 7, 2007. The evening started 5 p.m., and proved to be a highly successful night. A variety of projects were available for those who desired, and included several holiday items under the direction of Doraleen Penrod and Traci Bradford. Heidi Peace of Syracuse, presented the projects and assisted wherever needed. A delicious soup supper was served by Bonnie Foy and Tammy Peay. A special display featured items from several of the mini classes that have been meeting for the past several months with items from the cooking, quilting, book, and family history groups. ••• There have been a couple of birthdays of note recently. Walt Stewart observed his 90th birthday on Thursday, Nov. 8, amid cards, telephone calls, and a special birthday cake. A family celebration was held earlier this year to note his 90th birthday and the 95th birthday of his sister, Roselle. Lucille Allen celebrated her 80th birthday on Nov. 10, with an open house at her home in the afternoon. Family, friends and neighbors stopped by to wish her a happy birthday. ••• There are a number of our Benjamin neighbors who have or are going through serious surgeries or are under the weather for other reason. We wish them speedy recoveries. Grandma's Recipes Betty June Ott I When Mel cooks, he usually puts lots and lots of potatoes in the oven to bake. I have never timed any of my pies except pecan and pumpkin. I started baking my pies that way because I kept forgetting to set the timer and sometimes I would even forget that I had a pie in the oven (I was multitasking and forgot), but then that wonderful smell would start wafting through the house and that seemed to be just the right amount of time. If you absolutely have to time it, I would guess about 50 minutes (wimp). If you want to add a little bit of a special treat to your apple pie, throw in a small box of cinnamon Red Hot candies in the apple mixture. Very tasty. Now for the really easy, light and refreshing pie: the Ice Cream Pie. Ice Cream Pie Soften (don't completely melt) a 1/2 gallon of vanilla ice cream and mix in two Tablespoons to a 1/4 cup, to taste, of your favorite frozen drink concentrate. You can use a mixer. Pour into a.graham cracker crust and freeze for a couple of hours, or better yet, overnight. My two favorite concentrates are orange juice (tastes like an orange creamsicle) or the lime concentrate, just because I like lime. Add a drop or two of green food coloring for the lime pie because it will make it look nicer, or other colors depending on what flavor you are using and how deep you want the color. This will soon become a family favorite. The cherry pie will be next week and maybe even pumpkin pie. Yum! Another perspective on Halloween Grandma's Recipes . I was really impressed with the number of fathers who were out with their children. A few mothers came with their children, and both parents came with a few children. But it was the fathers who impressed me the most. They seemed to be not only concerned, but insistent that their children have good manners. They cared about their children, making sure they were safe. I really do believe they enjoyed themselves. I have seen a few fathers who seem to be put out if they have to take their children anywhere, but these men were truly good examples for their children. |
