When Curtis Barney was in kindergarten, he spent some time in the hospital before being diagnosed with glomerulonephritis. In layman's terms, a type of kidney disease caused by inflammation of J' iiii rally around the internal kiu -.^: structure. This type of kidney disease is often temporary and reversible, but it can be also be progressive and end in kidney failure. While other kids would get well-child visits, Barney would visit kidney specialists to see how his kidneys were faring. During these visits, he was told that at some point his kidneys would stop losing functionality and plateau. He was also told that some day, he would probably need a kidney transplant. "It was always, vDo\vn the road you'll probably need a new kidney. See BARNEY • A8 VOUCHERS DEFEATED, WINNING CANDIDATES LOOK TO THE FUTURE The results of the election are in. While no state or national offices were decided in this election, Referendum 1 brought a higher-than-usual number of voters to the polls. Spanish Fork had a 44.75 percent voter turnout, while Salem and Woodland Hills recorded 50.39 and 57.28 percent, respectively. While Utah County voted 52.76 percent against vouch- ers, Spanish Fork weighed in at 61.56 percent against, with Salem at 60.05 percent against. Woodland Hills voted in favor of Referendum 1 at 64.63 percent. Below are interviews from the winning candidates in each of the city council races. Bob Fisher Bob Fisher ber said that this is Veterans honored at BYU game his first venture into city government, and he was "delighted with the election At halftime of the BYU/ TCU game on Thursday, Nov. 8, BYU held a special ceremony honoring America's veterans. Pictured, above, are James Hathaway and Keith Hall. Pictured, right, is Shirley Wilson. ' 0 James E. Hathaway served with the 865th Aviation Engineers in the Air Force. He was a heavy equipment operator in New Guinea and the Philippines. They were responsible for building the air fields so the planes could land. He remembers sitting on a bulldozer in the Philippines when General McArthur returned. General McArthur had to wade into the beach in knee deep water. Mr. Hathaway currently lives in Spanish Fork where he is very active in the American Legion and the Sons of the Pioneers. Jim Priest Jim Priest retired from the Air Force after a 30 year career. He enlisted as a private and retired as a colonel. He served 14 years overseas including Japan, Alaska, England and Germany. He was trained in weather support and navigation, as well as flying. He was born in Nevada and now resides in Springville. See VETERANS • A10 |
