The local quilting club, the Woodbee Quilters, donated their "Mystery Quilt" at the City Council meeting last Thursday. The quilt was the joint work of-13 women, most of them novice quilters, working in a round-robin sequence to complete a quilt with no design. Sue Swinyard gave the first quilter a bag of scraps and Unfinished Objects (UFOs), with instructions to make it creative "with a lot of pizzazz!" Each quilter rearranged or added to the design as she liked and then passed it on to the next quilter without showing it to anyone else. The team also kept a journal about their experience in a small notebook that traveled with the piece. After two cycles through the group, the top was finished. Sue Swinyard added the backing, the fill, and the top stitching to turn the creation into a finished quilt. Only then did the whole group see what they had done. The quilt is "self-documenting" because it has a small pocket on the back for the original instructions and the journal notebook. A panel on the back lias the names the group: Cheryl Davis,Claudia Fisher, Patricia Finley, Tricia Arrowsmith, Joan Baldwin, Lori Walker, Sue Swinyard, Eunice Marshall, Linda Rothermel, Mary Johnson, Kitye Robbins, Ellise Poulsen and Donna Cottam.
