CITYSCAPE: Caleb Mitchell's bracketing technique allows him to create photos with a wide range of color and detail, like this shot of downtown Salt Lake. SFHS alum opens photography gallery Christene Choate STAFF W R I T E R Spanish Fork High School graduate, Caleb Mitchell recently opened a photo gallery in Provo, featuring his works. Mitchell has been interested in photography for as long as he can remember. "It seems like usually I've been happy to be the volunteer documenter for my friends and family," said Mitchell. After graduating in 2001, Mitchell joined the army where he earned enough money to purchase a Single Lens Reflex (SLR) camera. "Ever since then I have been fascinated with the science behind photography," said Mitchell. "The biggest part that interested me initially, and is still the biggest part today, would be freezing these single moments in space and time forever; and even better to be able to refer back to them whenever I want." Mitchell is mainly self taught, but did take a photography course in high school. "These days it's pretty easy to get self taught in anything you're interested in since so many great people before us have figured things out and were nice Courtesy photos / Caleb Mitchell ON DISPLAY: Caleb Mitchell sits in his gallery, currently showing photographic scenes from around Utah. enough to leave their notes behind," said Mitchell. Mitchell uses a unique style of photo editing in which uses multiple exposures to create a unique effect. He uses this editing style to document places in Utah. Mitchell's desire to open a gallery came after people's reaction to his art. "As I was showing people my work I was bombarded with people's requests for me to shoot the places in Utah that they loved," said Mitchell. Caleb was going to school to be an RN at the time, but chose to stick to his passion rather than a career path. "My friends and I decided to get a space and create a gallery where people can get access to affordable unique photos of the things they love locally," said Mitchell. Caleb has recently taken a liking to portraiture. "At first I was less apt to take pictures of people and focused mostly on docu- menting iconic things in Utah and felt like people might be a distraction from the main subject," said Mitchell. Mitchell realized as people started slipping into his pictures that people provided a unique and critical element to his pictures. "Ultimately people make for the most unique subjects, and at the same time, the most relatable. So SF brothers play role in HMS 3 Marilyn Nielson STAFF W R I T E R Kids worldwide have been anxiously awaiting the release of Disney's "High School Musical 3," but here in Spanish Fork, one family has actually been involved in its creation. Hefa, Soane and Tu'iNiua Tuita all played roles in the movie, which came out on Oct. 24. Nine-year-old Tu'iNiua played the most prominent role of the three brothers, starring as the young Chad. He wore a wig to make himself look just like the older Chad, played by Corbin Bleu, with his distinctive corkscrew curls. The scene, filmed in Salt Lake, took place in a junkyard. "It's a flashback type scene, so at one point it shows the characters Chad and Troy crawling underneath a car in the junkyard. Then the younger versions of themselves crawl out the other side," explained Tu'iNiua's Mom, Karley Tuita. Tu'iNiua said he loved filming the movie. "I have a lot of favorite parts," he said. "I liked learning the dance. And I like crawling under the car in the junkyard. That was really fun." Adding to the fun was SkylarJohnsonTu'iN ilia's friend and fellow dancer at OrenVs Center Stage Dance Studio. Johnson was cast as young Troy, so the two were able to work together on the scene. Soane. TifiNiiufs 14year-old brother, also appears in "High School Musical 3" as a featured dancer and was cast as one of Sharpay's fans. 'The best part of being in the movie for me was meeting so many new friends." Soane said. "And the coolest part of the movie to watch was the part my little brother was in. He was really good." Upcoming projects for Soane include a new Disney Channel movie, "Hatching Pete," which it set to come out March 9, 2009. The oldest Tuita brother, 17-year-old Hefa, danced in the second High School Musical movie, and was asked to come back to dance in the graduation scene of "High School Musical 3." Hefa also starred as one of six dancers on N'tckelodeSee HMS 3 • A8 See MITCHELL • A8 Students encourage recycling in SF Jen Allen STAFF W R I T E R Approximately 1000 residents city wide have already singed up for the Curbside Recycling Program. But that's just not enough for the city to gain the contract. Luckily though, several individuals are coming to the rescue. Grant Weaver, a student at Utah Valley University and a member of the DEX club on campus, is using his resources in the club to do a door to door campaign to sign ;; up citizens for the program. Weaver said, "My friend Nick Romano and I one day just sat down wanting to do some kind of service project, and recycling interested us. Then we found out Spanish Fork was trying to start a curbside program, so the process was already going". Weaver, along with local Boy Scout . Nick Jarman, is hoping to canvas the entire city in two Saturdays. They will be sending vol- unteers out into Spanish Fork's neighborhoods in hopes of signing up the last 1000 households for the program. While their goal is 1000, they're not placing any limit. To ensure that all citizens have an opportunity to participate in the recycling program, there will be a booth at Maceys both Saturday Oct 8 and 15. If you don't receive a knock on your door, you can stop by the booth to sign up from the hours of 9 a.m.-5 p.m. The volunteers coming to your door can be expected during the hours of 9-2 p.m. To sign up for the program visit www.spanishfork.org/recycle. Any citizens wishing to help with the drive can email: recycle@spanishfork.org. FAMILY AFFAIR: The three Tuita brothers, Soane, Hefa and Tu'iNiua, were all part of "High School Musical 3." |
