The $8,400 grant was funded by the Utah Highway Safety Department and The Utah State Health Department. Operation Crosswalk Enforcement was designed to educated citizens through a combination ofenforcement and media coverage. Over the next several weeks, officers from the Spanish Fork Police Department will be selecting locations in the down town area where pedestrian crossings are not regulated by a traffic light. The enforcement objective is to reduce' the number of pedestrian-related accidents in the City. For public information, the enforcement schedule for this enforcement is as follows: Aug. 27 at 100 South Main St. from 12-2 p.m. Sept. 10, 2008 at 100 North Main St., from 12-2 p.m. Sept. 24, 2008 at 100 South Main St. from 12-2 p.m. Pedestrian-related accidents have increiAed over the past few years, including one pedestrian fatality already in 2008. The Police Department will use a plain-clothes officer to walk on the crosswalk to see if motorist are yielding properly to pedestrians on those crosswalks. Those motorist who fail to yield as required by law will be issued citations for those violations. Under Utah Law, the driver of a vehicle is required to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk by slowing or stopping. When the pedestrian is on the half of the roadway upon which the vehicle is traveling, or when the pedestrian is approaching so closely from the opposite half of the roadway as to be in danger. Driver distractions are a major factor in pedestrian-related accidents. Cell phones, radio and other in-car distractions take the drivers attention away from the roadway, making crosswalk travel very dangerous. Our goal is to keep our citizens safe and to educate them on the dangers that we face on our roadways. |§DUP,.Twilight Campfggjjgj We are now getting ready to start the 2008-2009 year for the Daughters of Utah Pioneers.
