Show i usiness A8 • WEDNESDAY, APRIL 30, 2008 SF native part of winning team Marilyn Nielson STAFF WRITER Spanish Fork resident Brady Woolford is part of the winning team in B YU's 2008 Business Plan Competition. The team, named Klymit, was awarded the grand prize for their initial product: a ski jacket that uses gases inside the fabric to keep the wearer warm. "For the competition, we made a prototype of our product and presented a business plan for it," Woolford said. "Basically, it works by using noble gases—such as argon, krypton, and xenon—to trap warm air inside the jacket." Because of their composition, these gases reduce the amount of heat that can pass through them, with the result that all the heat is kept inside next to the wearer's body. And the insulation in the lining can be adjusted by turning a dial which releases the gases, thus increasing or decreasing the warmth of the jacket. Although their prototype was a ski jacket, Klymit has plans to expand their product line to include other coldweather gear such as ski pants, etc. Woolford became involved with Klymit last year when he saw a flier requesting the services of an engineer. "The president of our team had this idea, and he entered the B YU competition last year, too," said Woolford. "He made it into the semifinals, so he decided Courtesy photo NEW BUSINESS: The Klymit team took first place in BYU's 2008 Business Plan Competition. "This award was created as a means of recognizing individuals and/or organizations who exemplify the core message of the Statue of Responsibility," said Bolz. Central to the core message of the Statue of Responsibility is this paraphrased statement by Dr. Viktor E. Frankl, "In order for freedom to endure generation after generation, our liberties (or rights) must be lived in terms of responsibleness." "Our award is more about recognizing individuals and organizations that display socially responsible behaviors in their work and studies," Bolz said. "Through her undergradu- ate studies, Tara understands the historical significance that the principles of liberty and responsibility play in preserving freedom," said Bolz. "We feel that Tara's course of postgraduate research at Cambridge will undoubtedly lead to issues of personal and corporate responsibility which are at the core message of why the Statue of Responsibility is being built." Tara Westover recently received the 'Gates Cambridge Scholarship', valued at $37,000. While attending the University of Cambridge in England, Tara will pursue graduate level research that will identify the political and historical factors that prevent individuals from becoming successful and economically independent. Tara is from rural Idaho and studied history and political science at Brigham Young University.
