Show t -N E \V S Spanish Fork Covering what matters most WEDNESDAY, APRIL 30, 2008 • A7 Kiwanis Obituary Helen Henderson Nelson Hatch Helen Henderson Nelson Hatch, 87, died peacefully April 26, in Payson. She was born Feb. 28, 1921, in Arimo, Idaho, to Henry J. and Rebecca Henderson Nelson. She married William J (Bill) Hatch Nov. 19, 1945, in the Logan LDS Temple and they lived their lives in Rexburg, Idaho and Spanish Fork. They were together for over 51 years and were seldom apart. Bill preceded her in death on Feb. 28, 1997. Now they are together again. She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother and dearly loved her children and grandchildren and they loved her. Her home was a sanctuary and haven for all who entered. The comfort of her fire and the warmth of her heart healed many souls. Active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-daySaints, she served in many capacities but mostly loved serving the young women and talked often of those happy days. Charity and service were always her way and she never failed to offer a helping hand, a smile or encouragement to those in need. Her favorite saying when one asked how she was doing was, "I'm still mean and ornery." Arimo, Idaho; Rose (Abe deceased) Hatch of Layton and Betty Jo (Kenny) Lowry of Logan and many dear friends who will miss her. She was also preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Rebecca (Gerald - deceased) Christiansen and Mary Nelson. A special thanks to the seniors whom she so dearly loved at the Spanish Fork Senior Center and to those who have attended to her needs over the past few months at the Spanish Fork Beehive Home, Mountain Air Assisted Living and Payson Nursing and Rehabilitation. Mom was strong, faithful, and, like Dad, was straightforward and down to earth. We are so grateful they arc together again. She will be greatly missed by all those who loved and knew her. Scout earns salesman honors Michael and Susan Morris have a hard time knowing what to get their son Michael for Christmas and for his birthday. That's because Michael, as the top Scouting Expo ticket salesman in the Palmyra District for the past four years in a row. has won everything a 15-year-old could ever want. The more Expo tickets a scout sells, the more money he earns for his scout unit, and the more prizes he earns for himself. During the past four years, Michael has won four season passes to Seven Peaks Water Park, three GPS systems, three sleeping bags, two 20-speed mountain bikes, two portable DVD players, two iPods, two digital cameras, and several tents, backpacks, hydration packs, camping stoves, knives, flashlights, hats, binoculars and meals. ."I suppose I could have just sat around "playing video games or Guitar Hero, but selling tickets and winning prizes has been fun," said Michael, a member of Varsity Team 1525, sponsored by the Spanish Ridge Ward. To be named top Michael Morris salesman, Michael had to sell a minimum of 100 Expo tickets each year, while also outselling other scouts in the district. Last year he sold 130. The year's Scouting Expo will be held Saturday, May 3, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Thanksgiving Point in Lehi. The Expo provides an opportunity for scouts to showcase Scouting in action. A $10 family pass, which comes with a booklet of money-saving coupons, may be purchased from scouts throughout the Palmyra District or at the door. Michael said knocking on doors has given him a little taste of what it's like to go tracting as a missionary. "I'm sure that selling Expo tickets is easier, but it's been good practice for the future.11 he said. A ninth-grader at American Heritage School of American Fork, Michael said most people he has approached about buying Expo tickets have been nice —including those who didn't want to buy a family pass. "But sometimes parents will send a child to the door to announce that they're not home," Michael said. "I always laughed when a. child would tell me, 'My mom and dad said to tell you they're not home.'" So is Michael planning on winning top salesman honors five years in a row? 'This year I'm helping my 11-year old brother, Samuel, sell a few tickets," he said. "I think it's time I gave someone else a shot at being top salesman in the district. After all, how many mountain bikes, GPS systems, DVD players and iPods do I need?" SFHS Orchestra The SFHS orchestras and bands will perform Tuesday, May 20, 2008 at 7 p.m. In a combined concert in the SFHS auditorium. The orchestras have done well in competition recently. The Philharmonic Strings earned an excellent rating on April 24. Chamber Strings received a superior rating and will compete at state May 16-17, 2008 at BYU. Chamber also earned a superior rating at State Solo/Ensemble on Saturday, April 26. Kendra Creer performed a violin solo and received an excellent rating. Cemetery Decoration for Mother's Day Spanish Fork City Parks Department crews are now preparing the Cemetery to look great for Mother's Day. We need everyone's help. Cemetery patrons have placed plants, cut flowers, potted flowers, artificial flowers and plants, baskets, containers, stands, and other memorabilia around the head stones and sometimes covering the grave site. This makes it impossible to maintain the grass without removing or damaging the memorabilia. Please remove these items from the grass around the head stones on or before Wednesday, April 30, 2008. Some grave markers provide room on the concrete skirting around the headstones for placing these items that won't conflict with the string trimmers and mowers. We encourage patrons to use these areas only and keep all items well away from the grass. On Monday, May 5, 2008 the cemetery crews will dispose of all remaining memorabilia not removed from the grass. After we maintain the grass the cemetery will be available for decoration for Mother's Day on Thursday, May 8, 2008. Thank you. Nebo Chorale The Spanish Fork Arts Council invites you to come celebrate spring with the Nebo Chorale in concert May 1 at 7:30 p.m. in the Spanish Fork High School Auditorium. Admission is free.
