The first of three children, a sister Betty and Robert. Al was a life-long learner and loved music. He was an avid reader. He joined the U.S. Army Air Corps at age 18 at the beginning of World War II. After being commissioned as an officer his military career ended due to an illness. He was heartbroken, but soon found another career after receiving his degree in civil engineering with highest honors from the University of Arizona. He lived with his family and worked for many years for the U.S. Department of State Foreign Building operations in Central and South America and Mexico. Later he worked until he retired for U.S. Pipe and Foundry in Hawaii and Pleasant Grove. He loved his country and was a dedicated patriot throughout his life. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Doris (Dee) Burns, his daughter and son-in-law Susan and Keith Sutterely of Tucson, Ariz., his daughter and son-in-law Linda and Jim Walpole of Evergreen, Colorado, his son Terry Caudle and daughter in law Stephanie of Spring Valley, Calif. He leaves seven grandchildren, and four greatgrandchildren. Although Al would soon have been 84 his heart was ever young. His life was taken from him by a terrible accident. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. A memorial service was held in his honor on Monday, Feb. 4. In lieu of flowers contributions may be given to Best Friends Animal Society in Kanab.
