Show •N & W S- Spanish Fork Student raises funds for goals WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 12, 2007 • A5 Covering what matters most Obiturary David Varney is a 1.4-year-old young man from Salem who has spent much of his young life setting and reaching some lofty goals. At the age of 11, David decided to start his own lawn-mowing business. His business has grown to include doing a variety of odd jobs, and he currently earns his own spending money. He wanted to earn his Eagle by age 13, and accomplished that goal in August of 2006. He then decided to try to earn all of the merit badges currently available to, Boy Scouts. He has earned 102 out of the 121 available as well as 14 Eagle Palms. David is a very determined, hardworking, self-motivated young man. Ottesen A beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, Hyrum E. Ottesen, 84, died peacefully at his home Dec. 7, 2007. He was bom Nov. 2, 1923 in Palmyra to Hans L. and Nellie Barney Ottesen. He was educated in Spanish Fork, and was a senior in high school in 1940 when, just weeks after his birthday, President Roosevelt declared our nation at war. He enlisted in the Air Force in March, missing his graduation. Basic training was at Sheppard Field in Witchita Falls, Texas, then to Camp Kilmer, N.J., for overseas processing. A convoy of 36 ships took 15, days to Antwerp, Belgium, and finally by truck convoy to Erlongdon Air Base in Manchester, England, a huge supply base. The base was part of the 8th and 9th Air Force Service Command and he served there for 18 months. He also spent time in Kiev, Russia; Nuremburg, Germany; and France, returning home in 1946. He was then employed at Geneva and Ironton steel mills. He married Shirlene Roach April 14, 1954, in the Manti Temple, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in the church as a counselor in the YMMIA, ih the Sunday School presidency and as a home teacher. He was also a High Priest. He farmed with his fatherin-law, Ernest Roach, and together they established a successful dairy and beef cattle business. In 1967, his father-in-law was killed and he assumed full responsibility of the business, serving for three years on the Utah State Dairy Commission. A quiet man, his legacy to his family is that of honesty, integrity, hard work and a name to be proud of. He was truly a dedicated fanner. The alarm clock in the Ottesen home was set for 4:30 a.m. for 25 years. In his youth, he enjoyed hunting and fishing and worked on the farm with his father. After the luncheon, Netella Montague introduced her sister, Jenn Baadsgaard, and niece, Amanda Baadsgaard. Amanda is 13 and has been playing the harp for six years. Jenny said facts about the harp and Amanda played beautiful songs. Amanda illustrated sounds on the harp such as oriental, bell, angelic, "up and down" melodic strings and soothing melodies. Jackie Voorhees then read a Christmas story which gave everyone the Christmas spirit. The singing time was led by Jane B. Nelson, and piano was played by Ruth Leifson. A "Merry Christmas" was extended to all, and the Thalian song ended the party.The next meeting will be Feb. 6,2008. years, he enjoyed going on re-enactments and trail rides with his mules and covered wagon. He was proud of his pioneer ancestors and their contributions. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Shirlene Ottesen, Palmyra; children, Janeen (Phil) Thomas, Spanish Fork, Paul (Becky) Ottesen, Elizabeth (Ed) Nielsen, Barbara (Darin) Jensen, all of Palmyra and Elaine (Scott) Gunter of Malad, Idaho; his sister, Ina Olin of Waldport, Ore., and a brother, James Ottesen of Baltimore, Md.; sister-in-law Margaret Ottesen of San Mateo, Calif., and sister-in-law Carol Ottesen, of Orem and several nieces and nephews; thirty grandchildren; a grand,son, John Thomas, serving an LDS mission in Paraguay, and eleven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hans and Nellie Barney Ottesen, his brothers, Albert and Roy, and a grandson, Bradley Thomas. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 11, at 11 a. m. at the Palmyra Ward Church, 1866 West 5000 South.; Friends and family visited Monday evening 6-8 p.m. at the Walker Mortuary, 187 South Main in Spanish Fork and at the church prior to the services. Interment was in the Spanish Fork City Cemetery with full military rites. Aitken thanked all those who donated and said it was a great experience. Along with the other 35 participants from the South County area, Aitken helped raise $13,000 to benefit MDA.
