Show The Thunderbird Tuesday September 25, 1984 Artist guild lacks support Daniel WELL TAKE BETTER CARE OF YOUR CAR Gowon by The lack of knowledge about the art department has brought about a lack of student participation in the club, said Kelvin Yazzie, president of SUSCs Artist Guild. With more student involvement, the guild may become recognized nationally, Yazzie said. Last year, the club had a membership of 20 students, most of whom were art majors. Membership is open to all students regardless of their majors. Ofter non-ar- t students develop a profound interest in painting and change their majors to art. Art students learn to frame and mat their paintings with glass. Framing is one of the basic elements of art. Matting is putting cardboard to hold the painting and add color and decoration. Yazzie hopes to see an art lecture in this years convocation series. If students taking convocations are told the essence of art, Page 37 943 S. During childhood, Yazzie learned to appreciate art with the help of his mother who weaves Navajo blankets. He was overwhelmed by his mothers skill in weaving beautiful blankets and it soon became one of his most loved hobbies. Yazzie does a little painting in his spare time. When outdoors, he specializes in landscapes and mountains. Indoors, his interest lies in still life doors, lamps and Yazzie said, it will probably boost carvings. The main function of the club is to raise money to sponsor art exhibitions for club members, and tours to major art shows around the country. With more membership, the club hopes to expand the art tours to overseas, Yazzie said. Mark Talbert, a new staff member, plans to improve the clubs sculpturing skills by heading fieldtrips to Cedar Canyon this year. The club has never really had sculpture instructors, Yazzie said. On September 28, the club will be having an opening social in the canyon park. New students will be introduced to staff members and previous members of the club. This activity is designed to help students get acquainted with each other and know who their instructors will be. New students are welcome, Yazzie said. Director Ron Aden said the choir will be a training ground for persons interested in singing, but dont have the experience or background for Chamber Chorale or the vocal jazz group Opus II. It will be a spot to find that talent, maintains Aden. Acappella will not require an audition, and will be offered as a class for credit. Aden said anyone with an interest is welcome to sign up for the course. There are still some openings Chorale and Opus II and Aden said students should see him to make an appointment for an audition during the first left in two class days. Its a simple audition-n- o one has failed to walk away from one yet, notes Aden. Chorale is a 60 member choir that performs a wide variety of musical numbers. Aden said there is a strong need for tenor and bass parts, but he will not discourage altos and sopranos.
