A Students are welcome to check out athletic equipment during hours at the P.E. Building. The equipment and the use open-reof the facilities is provided free to SUSC students with an l.D. c All work and no play makes for boring day by Amy Page Southern Utah may not be the fitness capital of the world, but SUSC does have its own spa of sorts in the form of open recreation at the Physical Education Building. There are classes held all day long in the P.E. Building, but from 7 to 10 p.m., Monday thru Friday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, its open to students with an l.D. card. The facilities include a weight room , a gym , a swimming pool and racquetball courts. It is also open during those times to community people for a minimal charge that is invested in new equipment and upgrading the facilities. The hours from 6 to 8 a.m. are set aside for faculty members and boosters people who donate money to the atheletic program. According to Jim Neilson, the director of the recreational facilities, there is a weight room and a gym available. There is also a pool open when there is a lifeguard on duty. The laquetball courts are available any hours between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., with the ex eption of noon to p.m. Reservations need to be made to use the courts, and the number to call and do this is Neilson is also in charge of the equipment cage where students can check out various items with an l.D. card. The cage contains basketballs, baseballs and bats, racquetball racquets, and lots of other equipment. Neilson will even issue towels to weightlifters. If the equipment is checked out by individual students it has to stay in the building. But campus clubs are welcome to check equipment out overnight, according to Neilson. Phere are locker rooms open but locks are not available during the open rec period Baseball Coach Bill Groves, who shares an office with Neilson, believes that this program is great. 1 586-783- Its the opportunity and chance for students, faculty, and families to come and work out and have a good time, he said. Groves also said that the place is packed during the open hours and 90 percent of the people who use the facilities are students.
