The purpose of the tenant association is to inform students of their legal rights and to inform landlords of the students needs and problems. Were working for both the students and the landlords, said Connell. The Tenant Association also serves as arbitration between student and landlord disputes. It plans on keeping a current list of openings for students in local housing. The goal of the association is to bring student tenants and landlords together, said Connell. "It wants to create seminars to educate students to their legal rights as renters, he said. It also plans to publish a handbook listing a guide to tenant living and a list of ASSUSC approved housing. Students living off campus now have help in fighting their housing battles. The new ASSUSC Tenant Association begins this quarter at SUSC. It plans to move from the student office to better serve the offices to an students. Community landlords received a form telling them about minimum standards that the student association will accept. If landlords agree to uphold these standards, their apartment complexes will be listed as student housing. These standards include safety codes, renters rights and housing rules enabling the students and landlords to work together for a better environment in the apartments. October 24 is the prospective date for the landlord contract to come to Mitch Connell, student affairs coordinator. Connell, a former resident adviser for two and a half years, has had experience in dealing The association will be holding a working brunch with local landlords to introduce the Tenants Association to the landlords. We want to gain landlord feedback as to the effective running of the tenant association, Connell said. Members of the association will attend necessary conferences and workshops conducted by the Utah Student Tenants Association. In coordination with the Cedar City residents, the association wants to execute an Operation Beautification campaign with the purpose of beautifying local apartments and building student pride in their places of residence. It wants to provide peer counseling, consultation, and seminars with student tenants for roomate conflicts and financial problems. Gretchen Bear will ead student activities. Seymour, acclaimed composer and special librarian at the SUSC library, was knocked unconscious and robbed last Wednesday while on a business trip to San Francisco. Seymour, who was unable to identify his assailant, said the man made off with most of the money he was carrying at the time. The incident left Seymour with a swollen jaw and possibly a minor concussion, but he said the injury wasnt painful. Seymour, 91, is known for his operatic compositions, including the music for The Lure and the Promise, and his collection of 19th century Americana, on display m the special collections area of the college library. The robbery occured right after breakfast m his hotel, Seymour said. He had just entered the elevator to return to his room when a man, who Seymour mistakenly thought was a hotel employee, followed him in. As he reached to push the button for his floor he was apparently hit from behind and lost consciousness. Everything went black. didnt know what hit me, said.
