The Academy was built where our Elementary School is today. In the year of 1896 the roof of the Academy was removed and a story of brick was added to the stone building. A belfry was added on the top, and there housed a large bell, which served for school bell, church bell, fire alarm, and curfew. This bell also rang on the day of a funeral, as soon as the procession left the house and city of Kanab. In the fall of 1870, Brigham Young and a party of surveyors laid out the town, one square mile. In 1871 the first school was held. The school building consisted ofone large room about 15 by 30 feet, with a fireplace at one end. The school was for the Mormon settlers children. School was held at night so that the teacher could help with the building during the daylight didnt stop until they had hours. When winter and heavy reached the Academy for the snow came, school could be held during the day as all building was halted. The number of students increased until there were over one hundred, and the room was so crowded that many only had services. In 1924, this same bell was moved to the steeple of the newly Saints completed Latter-da- y with the Chapel, understanding with the Bishop that it would ring for school. Brigham Young had predicted that someday a Temple would top this hill and now the people said he had meant a temple of learning. The hill is of clay but even this in the winter couldnt dampen the spirits of the students. The first through sixth grades moved to the south and the high school students occupied the north of the building. The school song KHS our KHS, which is still sung today, was written in the fall of 1918 by Irene Haycock. The grandest event that ever has been held in the building was held in the auditorium on Friday, February 16, 1923. The students worked hard and hauled plenty of soil and manure and planted lawn up the center of the hill to the school building. No one expected the lawn to grow on the clay, but the students and Mr. Willard Ford, our custodian, wouldnt give up. Mr. Ford often arose at 2 a.m. to irrigate. In the fall, rows of colorful flowers bordered the lawn. To Mr. Ford belongs the credit of transforming the sticky clay hill into the green, flower bordered slope that was widely photographed by tourists from all parts of the world. On Februaiy 2, 1929 the school inspector recommended that sanitary toilets and showers be installed. The school year of 1929-3- 0 brought the organization of the Pep Club to the high school.
