last may The these I 1 j friends have been lifelong life long pals and are well known throughout southern utah an interview with 1 mr rose on tuesday brought to i light an interesting story of the j early life of mr hewitt and their j long association together which follows i james R hewitt was born ini in I 1 london on april 16 1863 his i boyhood was spent in england i and as he grew to manhood he engaged in business bK siness that took him to scotland and wales while yet in his twenties he came to americ J ica going to the home of his sis ter in arizona where he stayed i for a while engaging in business with his brother in law in 1895 on hearing of the san juan gold boom he left arizona and settled in bluff staying at the homes of bishop uriah nielson and F J adams for two years he quarried much of the rock used in in building the bluff homes and in in 1897 moved on to verdure to live with dick butts and to help in in operating his sawmill at that point about this time he became interested te in prospecting on the blue mountains and together with a man named martin he staked the gold queen mine selling his share of it later to a man named heywood f for or it was during this time of prospecting that he and henry rose met and struck up the friendship that has lasted over forty years mr rose is a native utahn having been born and reared in ogden but was attracted to the southern part of the state to visit relatives in escalante many years ago later finding his way to san juan county he purchased a I 1 acre ranch east of conicello Moni cello from thomas foy sr and after some thel ten years of prospecting on the blues with jimmie hewitt decided to quit mining speculation and set 1 continued on page 7 JAMES R HEWITT 0 continued f from rom page 1 tie on his ranch mr hewitt followed soon after and sa staked aked a acre claim adjoining jol ning his friends property together they farmed ar an 1 1 wintered cattle f for or a number of years about 20 years ago they sold out to a man by the name of oberto for the sum of after which they moved lo 10 0 east canyon and lived there together ever since they made a livelihood wintering cattle for san juan cattlemen and caring for their own stock and truck gardens during the past year mr rose met wi wih h two accidents suffering a broken arm at one time vr alzy fractured collarbone collar bone on an occasion from which injuries he quickly recovered however early in may mr hewitt showed signs of failing health and has been ill ever since he refused medical aid preferring to bezared be cared for by his lifelong life long friend who nursed him through each attack up to the last mr rose said that for the past two weeks he realized I 1 the end was near and that he was with his friend constantly day and night the end came peacefully on sunday toward midnight and early monday mr rose came to monticello to make arrangements for the funeral which was held at ten wednesday dorng A large number of fi friend I 1 tended the impressive freS held hel d on wednesday morning in i the church the opening prayer by peter jones was followed by hie he hymn jesus lover of soul by the bronson brothers arch clint and fletcher and clarence black bishop redd was the first speaker he paid high tribute to the character of jimmie hewitt and quoted from scripture to emphasize certain traits exemplified by mr hewitt another quartette number blest be the tie that binds f followed oll owed ralph bailey told of his affection and deep feeling for jimmie hewitt which dated from childhood when he stayed at the bailey home f for or a period of time he told of the generous hospitality extended to all who ever called at the dry valley ranch where jimmie hewitt and henry rose lived for so many years and while they were living close to town karl barton emphasized the I 1 comradeship of the two men and also spoke of their many friends who always found welcome and I 1 help when most needed the quartette then sang nearer my god to thee bishop C E walton was the next speaker his warm affection and the sadness he felt in parting w with ith a lifelong friend was stressed in a beautiful way he spoke of the fine example both mr hewie and mr rose have set and of I 1 f aj deep sympathy for the latter aay a result of the separation of these lifelong life long friends after another number by the quartette abide with me horace pehrson offered the closing prayer he asked that strength be given mr rose in his hour of sorrow the services were continued at the graveside with karl barton dedicating the grave it will be a comforting thought to mr rose to realize how much he and his companion of many years jimmie hewitt have meant to their many friends in this county we regret that lack of space will not permit us to relate more of the incidents men mentioned toned by the speakers who have had close co tact act with the deceased and ta mr rose seldom are the gout things people think of another person
