Show 4J The Salt Lake Tribune Sunday, October 23, Aire Jazzz 13 Continued from Page J 1 Schaves Again, even if Eaton can't average 10 points a game, be provides a defensive presence, as he is the league's best shot blocker on a basis And if Rich Kelley with the Jazz, he eventually will lend experienced depth at this position At guard, Rickey Green and Darrell Griffith will be back in tandem for their third full year Besides their offensive punch, they can provide some larceny at the defensive end too They are backed up by Jerry Eaves, who is the best third guard the Jazz have had in their five years here Eaves had an excellent rookie season and is becoming a solid pro The other thing about this Jazz team is that, suddenly, it doesnt seem so young anymore This is an experienced team Drew is entering his 10th season, Dantley his eighth And players like Green, Griffith, and Wilkins are entering their fourth seasons with the Jazz. These guys have grown together, and if theyre going to win together, now is the time Sure, there are younger players like Eaves, Eaton, Anderson, Bailey, and Brb Hansen, but the core of the team suddenly has the look of experience And if the Jazz are in a run for the playoffs in March and April, theyll be glad to have that experience on their side for a change While the Jazz can certainly be expected to be more competitive this season, there will be other differences m their 1983-8- 4 season, the most significant one being, of course, the shift to Las Vegas for a quarter of the home schedule The Jazz will be playing 11 of their home games in the Thomas and Mack Center, the new 18,500-searena on the campus of the UniVegas. It will versity of Nevada-La- s contain some features that will make it, in the opinion of some Jazz officials, the finest arena in the NBA The Jazz are scheduled to make their first appearance in Las Vegas Nov 23 in a game against the Chicago Bulls Other than the ChicaLas Vegas go game, the per-minu- re-sig- owners Ust spring, at about the same time he announced the completion of a loan from First Security Bank that gives the team its most stable financial footing ui its five years here In mid summer, the Jazz announced the hiring of Dave Check-ett- s as the clubs executive vice president in charge of operations In effect, Battistone, ManChecketts, and Coach-Generager Frank Layden now form a making, ruling triumvirate of the club Dave Fredman, former public relations and marketing director, day-to-da- y al decision-- moved to Las Vegas to take over the clubs operations there, and that opened tiie doot fur Laura Kcrlovich to become only the second woman public relations director in the NBA. It also opened the way for the Jazz to to hire Jim Nantz of KSL-Tserve as color commentator with veteran Hot Rod Hundley on the Jazz's 12 road broadcasts back to Salt Lake City. V But all these changes will be considered merely cosmetic next spring if the Jazz get where theyve longed the to be and have never been playoffs This is their best chance to do it Playoff Races? Heres How 8283 Could Have Looked Following is the way the 1982-8- 3 playoff race would have looked if the 1983 84 format, which permits 16 playoff teams instead of 12, had been used The teams that would have made the playoffs are in bold, with won-lorecords and games behind following st East denotes division champion. x at schedule will include contests against Western Conference teams only The Jazz also had another shuffle in the front-offic- e with some moves relating to the Las Vegas scheme and some not The key move at the top was the advent of the Bagleys to join Sam Battistone of the club Battistone as announced the Bagleys as 50 percent n, Adrian Dantley, one of the Jazzs own, is shown here in the midst of one of his I great nights ever, his career-hig- h outburst against the Bulls last December. 57-poi- nt Economy Priced Light Truck GLT GLT Traction Jazz Groom Their Own Players for 8384 Continued from Page l right to say that he is truly one of their own In one sense or mother, each of the Jazz players is a special project J-- of the organization The club got Green and Wilkins as free agents off the Billings team in the Continental Basketball Association m December of 1980. They signed Natt as a free agent out of the CBA Iasi season. They signed Anderson as a free agent just after he had been cut by the 76ers last winter They drafted Griffith and Bailey in the first round of the 1980 and 1983 drafts respectively, and they look to them as starters They drafted Eaves, Eaton, and Hansen below the first two rounds and feel like they have hit a bonanza in each case These are all the Jazzs own people The idea is to have the team develop its own character and its own winning tradition. If the team begins to win, then the idea of having a home-grow- n core will be vindicated As part of the theory of forming a winning tradition within the Jazz organization, Layden believes in getting players who have helped other programs win. He drafts that way With this years addition of Bailey, the Jazz now have three players who started for NCAA championship teams Bailey for North Carolina State m 1983, and Griffith and Eaves for Louisville in 1980. In addition, Green played and starred for an NCAA finalist (Michigan in 1976), and Anderson was the MVP for an NIT champion (Bradley m 1982) Eaton (UCLA), Dantley (Notre Dame), and Hansen (Iowa) also played in some of the nations consistently best college programs Getting good people and getting them from good programs has been Laydens goal as he gathers his own players He has tried to put together the pieces one by one, and now, in his fifth year as general manager, he hopes that his design will finally bear fruit. II one of the leagues best point guards, settling m as one of the NBAs top He began m 1979 with his trade for Dantley All he had to give up was Spencer Haywood, and that trade will always be looked upon as one of the NBAs great steals Dantley went on to become one of the leagues most unstoppable scorers, and his arrival at small forward in the first Utah year of 1979-8- 0 marked Budding Block No 1 assists-and-stea- one-for-o- men as well as a scorer Building ls Block No 3 In 1982-8the Jazz took a chance and drafted the Eaton in the fourth round and then took a bigger chance by signing him to afive-yea- r contract. They worked on developing him, and by the end of the year he was their starter at center. Hes not a good offensive center yet, but hes one of the leagues top shot blockers Building Block No 4 This year, Layden drafted the fifth block for his starting lineup strong forward Bailey In the meantime, he has also developed better depth than the team has ever had, with players like Drew, Eaves, and The next year, 1980, the Jazz drafted Griffth second overall and he became the NBAs Rookie of the Year He immediately asserted himself as a scorer, and his stranglehold on the shooting guard position marked Building Block No 2 next season, 1981-8was Greens first full one in a Jazz uniform, and he established himself as The Generals Light Truck Radial WHILE THEY LAST!
