Ultimate Source of Knowledge This country was MURRAY founded by men whose education came from studying the Bible and thats still the best education a child can have, A1 A.shman said. Mr. Ashmen is principal of Mountain West Christian School, housed in the New Life Christian Center, 4026 S. Main. The school, in its first year of operation, is a ministry of the New' Life Center and the Fall Armor Bible Institute. The school is already operating at its capacity of about 50 students,-bu- t administrators hope to double the facilities. The school did no advertising prior to the opening this fall, but was soon turning students away. Mr. Ashman said students receive a better education at Mountain West than in the public sector because, "The Bible is the word of God and the ultimate source of all knowledge. Alpha, Omega System The school uses the Alpha and Omega System of learning, which integrates the Bible into every subject. As an example, Mr. Ashman said ecology is explained in terms of stewardship of Gods creation. And in history classes students study secular history and the history of Jesus Christ and the 12 apostles. Mr. Ashman said that by bypassing the history of Christ secular schools have made Christianity almost mythology in childrens eyes. The system offers classes in math, language arts, social science, science, Bible, music and art. The school also holds chapel every morning. The Alpha and Omega System is an individualized curriculum in which each student must pass a mastery test before progressing. Each student must have the equivalent of a "B grade before advancing. Use Lifepaes Students work out of lifepaes, booklets with materials to learn and tests to take. An average student completes about 10 lifepaes per year, Mr. Ashman said. Students who do not pass each section with 80 percent or better are given extra help and may have to rework that section again. The school focuses on youngsters from kindergarten through eighth grade, but administrators hope to expand into high school soon. Mr. Ashman said that by taking away grade levels, Mountain West takes away the stigma that is connected with grades. He said motivation for learning comes from a student's own desire to learn and from outside factors. Mr. Ashman explained students who keep up with goals they set and do well on their tests are placed on status. Salt lake Alliance These students get five minutes extra at recess. If the student remains on status for a month they get to go on a field trip. Although most subjects taught at Mountain West are similar to those in secular schools, school policies differ. For instance, Mr. Ashman said the school allows corporal punishment. Calling the spanking biblical punishment, Mr. policy Ashman explained since the school is dedicated to training children, correction, especially in the areas g of and rebellion, is necessary. Pray After Spanking If a child is spanked, the offense is clearly explained to him. The principal will tell children how God's word has been violated and after the spanking he, or a staff member, will pray with the child. Parents are always notified if a child is spanked, Mr. Ashman said, and a written record of the date, offense, number of strokes and the name of the correcting staff member and a witness is recorded. A copy is sent to the parent. time-wastin- Citing scriptures, Mr. Ashman said that biblical punishment is required by God in order to train children in a right relationship with God. Mr. Ashman, who was the founder of a Christian school in Parowan, said The worst education I can provide for my children is better than the secular, humanism education they would receive in the public schools. The philosophy of Mountain West School is: Since God is the center of life, then life should be centered around God and that includes in education. And Mr. Ashman said Christian education is working and a Christian school is started every seven hours somewhere in the United States. He claims students taught in Christian schools test out three to five grades higher than students taught in secular schools because for the first time they are challenged. He said if a student leaves a Christian school to go into a public school, they are almost always put in advanced classes.
