The same thing can happen if you mix tetracycline wh an antacid. Graedon says if you keep tetracycline around too long, it may produce a that causes an anemia-lik- e reaction. Wasting Your Time Vitamin C is fine, Graedon says, but there is something you should know before taking it for a cold. Take it with aspirin and youre wasting your time because aspirin decreases its effectiveness. Men taking certain antihypertension drugs sometimes go through needless anguish, he says, because their doctors dont tell them that the drugs can interfere with male sexual performance. By Edith Herman calcium-containin- Chicago Tribune Most people have heard about the dangers of mixing drugs and alcohol, so Joe Graedon generally talks, about bananas or milk to make his point. ; Graedon, 31, is a pharmacologist turned drug educator and his point is this. Americans, who spend $11 billion a year on prescription drugs and $2.6 billion on the variety, know very little about those medicines and should. a f People should know that mixing drugs with each other or even with every day foods can cause severe reactions or nullify a drugs effectiveness, he says. They should know that some medicine is a waste of money and that some drugs produce that doctors dont always tell patients about. I Tells About Bananas So Graedon has written a book to tell people about such things as bananas. They can be lethal when combined with MAO Inhibitor drugs given for high blood pressure and depression, he says. The Interaction can greatly increase blood pressure. Its the same with avocados, pickled herring, or other foods with vraminp enzvme. er side-effec- ts tion. Nobody Reads Patients don't escape his criticism, either. Doctors tell people on anticoagulants not to take aspirin, right? So they take Empinn compound, Concidm, Vanquish all containing aspirin Nobody reads labels, NOBODY. It could be serious They could get into a hemorrhaging problem. Graedon isnt out to panic the public. He doesnt want people to forsake doctors. I dont want people to run to their medicine cabinets and throw away all of their drugs, he says. Drugs save lives. For those who decide, as did one of Graedons readers, that this book belongs in every home next to the family Bible, the American Pharmaceutical Assn, has a warning. The book is valuable because it makes people aware of drug interaction, an APA representative says. But, people also should remember that some drug reactions are more dangerous than others, that some occur frequently and some rarely, and that a lot depends on the drug dosage and the amount of interacting substance taken Graedon, for example, says in his book that drags which affect the heart or blood Graedon says he wrote his book, The (St. Martins Press Peoples Pharmacy $8.95), because he wants to "demystify medicine. He partly blames doctors for widespread ignotancc of drugs 1 Doctors don't tell patients enough, he insists. "They say if they told the patients about possible side effects, the patients would worry too much or start imagining things.
