Show COPPER MINES COMPANY the electrification of the property of national copper mining company in coeur dalene dis district brict of idaho conati most interesting that has es s one of the en made in that district tor for some time power will be purchased from the wash jon power company under a contract tich ich makes it desirable for the mining pany to maintain as high a power fac ion on the load as possible the mining pany has water rights from which ap horsepower can be de loped and it was determined to utilize is to supply part of the power require ats of the mine and mill and at the ne e time to use these generating stations improve the power factor as much as sidle accordingly two hydroelectric hydro electric ints ats will be built on dead mans creek abed so as to secure the maximum omit aunt of power from the available water each plant there will be installed an im ise type water wheel driving a 3 se ise 60 cycle generator these plants 1 be connected to the load in parallel h the power supply of the washington ter iter power company there will be no I 1 empt made to regulate the load taken I 1 these plants and as a consequence the ter ier I 1 wheels will not be supplied with gov lors rs of the ordinary design they will vever ever be supplied with gov ws ors which will deflect the waterwheel water wheel ales in case through any accident the d on either or both of the plants is dissected which would tend to allow the ter wheel to race when the machines i connected in parallel with the water power companas comp anys lines the bency delivered by the power com ay iy Y will necessarily fix the speeds at ich the generators can run and they will e as much of the mining companas comp anys load the water running through the water eels will permit they will therefore ays be developing as much power as sible ible yet their speed will be fixed and d consta constant constana nf by the frequency of the ver er companas comp anys supply lines the fields of these generators will be so ignec ned that by adjusting the excitation perly a very high power factor on the ire re load will be secured one of these hydroelectric hydro electric plants will designed for operation in the usual man r by an attendant in the station the other plant is designed to run without without attendance and the generator may be connected to or disconnected from the load from a distant point the compressor station at the mine by means of electrically operated switches the governor on the waterwheel water wheel will be also controlled by the same mechanism which operates the switches and the plant will be stopped or started without anyone going near it the installation at the mine will consist of approximately horsepower in induction motors the largest being horse power westinghouse motor driving an air compressor the mill which has been designed and is being built by the general engineering company of salt lake will be driven by approximately horsepower of induction motors each department of the mill will be driven by a separate motor the two largest individual machines being a horsepower on the hardinge mill department and a horsepower on the adly diy crushing department all the motors will be equipped with suitable protective apparatus to cut them off from tile ane supply lines in case of overload or in case of failure of power electric haulage will be used underground to handle the ore and the ore will be from the tunnel mouth to the mill over an electric railway which is rather unique in some of its features the run from the adit to the head of the mill is about feet long and in this distance there is a drop of feet in elevation necessitating a grade of 4 per cent on them the railroad the railroad is built along the side of dead mans gulch and has a 24 inch gauge and is laid with 30 pound rail the ore will be transported down this railway in trains of from eight to twelve cars each car carrying from tour four to five f ive tons of ore the equipment is designed to handle a tonnage of tons in two shifts of eight hours each the average haul within the tunnel will be about feet and the grade on this inside run will caily be one half of one per cent from the above it will be seen that a comparatively light locomotive would handle all of the work inside of the tunnel but that a locomotive of about eight tons in weight on drivers would be required for the work on the electric railway from tunnel mouth to the mill it was howe however verp considered undesirable to have two different types of locomotives which could not be used interchangeably and this was particularly ticul arly so in view of contemplated extensions underground which might require the service of an additional locomotive accordingly it was decided to standardize locomotive which could be used on a 4 ton independently underground but which could be consolidated into an 8 ton tandem unit for haulage over the electric railway this arrangement is 0 of f particular advant age in that it reduced the number of motormen required other advantages are that a double 4 ton tandem unit is easier on the rails than a single 8 ton unit would be and also with the gauge in use adequate motor capacity of good design can be placed between the wheels of the locomotive it is estimated that the tonnage handled can be doubled by adding another 4 ton locomotive at a later date and arranging motors so that the two locomotives used underground be used alternatively as the following unit of a tandem couple with a third locomotive loco motice operated only on the outside haul it was originally intended to install a gravity tram to take care of the transportation of the ore from the adit to the mill but a careful engineering investigation proved that an electric railway would handle the ore considerably cheaper even on the steep grade involved in fact a very careful analysis which was made before the above decision was reached indicated that the saving of the electric railway over that of the tramway would amount to several cents per ton handled the installation cost of the railway is a little less than the estimated installation cost of an aerial tramway the saving in operating cost is effected by obviating the necessity of handling the ore at the tunnel mouth and by reduced labor charges at the mill with the installation as at present made the trips will be made up at the ore chutes in the mine and the complete train as made up at that point will proceed out through the tunnel over the railway to the storage bins at the mill where the same crew consisting of a mo motorman trman and a trip man who came out with biti the suai will see to tny tnt dumping of the ore all of the electrical equipment for this installation is beier bein furnished by the westinghouse in electric electa ie manufacturing 0 company the electrical elect acal design for the mill equipment is in ahe hands of the general engineering company and the electric haulage system is the work of F gushing cushing moore chief engineer of the national copper mining company who worked in conjunction with the engineers of the westinghouse in company |
