Show quicksilver IN 1913 the domestic production of quicksilver in 1913 to preliminary figures collected by H D mccaskey of the united states geological survey from the individual producers was flasks flacks of seventy five pounds each valued at the estimated average san francisco domestic price for the year of at A comparison of these figures with the final published survey figures for 1912 shows a decrease of flasks flacks and of this is the lowest recorded output since 1860 and the lowest except in three years since 1850 when the commercial production of quicksilver began in this country there were twenty three mines reported productive in 1913 however twenty in 1912 and outside of california especially new prospecting and development was active and the output in two of the three producing states increased in 1913 and gives promise of further increase in 1914 As was indicated in the preliminary review of the quicksilver industry published by the survey one year ago the reported gradual decline in output from some of the larger ore bodies bodle s especially in california and unfavorable market conditions resulted in the decrease for 1913 heavy falling off in california the output estimated by the survey for california in 1913 was flasks flacks valued at a decline of flasks flacks and of this was the smallest recorded production of california since 1860 when the production was estimated at flasks flacks of 76 vz pounds each valued at and except tor for 1860 the value of the output in 1913 1913 was the lowest since the commercial mining of quicksilver in that state the decrease was due mainly to falling off in yield from the important guadalupe a and nd new almaden mines in santa clara county and it may be noted here that the increased output for 1912 over 1911 was to be cr edited credited chiefly to the guadulupe mine there was also a decline in sonoma county in 1913 from crom the culver baer and cloverdale min mines 9 where the loss nearly equaled the output for 1912 and there were small decreases in trinity and san benito counties the famous new idria mines of san benito C county 0 11 n have declined slightly in output for the last two years but remain the largest producers in america and produced nearly half I 1 the entire output of the un united 1 ted states in 1 n 1913 in fresno napa santa barbara and lake counties there were gains chiefly in the helen mine of lake county and in san luis obispo county there was a notable increase at the oceanic mine where it is understood considerable ore bodies have been developed no new furnaces were reported to have been erected in california in 1913 production in other states no production of quicksilver was reported from oregon utah or lV washington ashington in 1913 or from any of these states or arizona in 1912 but an output of the metal was reported in both maricopa maricola Mari copa and yavapai counties in arizona in 1913 in the quartzite district and in the Maza mountains respectively ively development work has b been een under way at the latter locality especially where extensive surface sh showing owing have b been een found and brisk mining has h as begun and a I 1 I 4 pipe retort was 1 in n operation on oil the S sunflower un claims at the close of the year la in nevada there was an actual decline in output of nearly 50 per cent from that of 1912 but more interests and activity in quicksilver mining were indicated in tills this state in 1913 than in any other state in the country in humboldt county considerable development work was done in america coronado and eldorado canyons a number of promising new fields were reported plants were erected or improved and a small output is reported from several producers in ill mineral county important new finds were reported in tile the pilot pilo mountains thirteen miles east of mina a considerable number of locations were nere made and development work has been in progress in nye county the mercury company continued production near lone though with a decreased output and the nevada cinnabar company took over the shoshone properties and began the erection of a 50 ton scott furnace important devel of ore was reported from the fahye r nelson P prospect northeast of lone and prospecting was done near rhyolite at bare mountain near beatty production was made from two properties by the 10 ton furnace operated by the telluride consolidated corporation po ration in texas the chibos mine at ter lingua brewster county remained the only producer in 1913 as it has been for several years the combined output of quicksilver in arizona nevada and texas for 1913 was t flasks flacks valued at against 4 flasks flacks valued at from nevada and texas together in 1912 a decrease oj ol 01 flasks flacks and of for 1913 market and prices the market was reported unfavorable by many producers in 1913 but others have stated that a demand existed for all that could be supplied the average san francisco domestic price per flask of 75 pounds is estimated at against in 1912 in 1911 in 1910 in 1901 in 1908 and in 1907 the market value of the output was therefore exceptionally low in 1913 there appears to have been some fear that the development of new deposits would result in overproduction or that fair domestic prices would bring in beav heavy y importations from present knowledge of available quicksilver resources in the united states it seems unlikely that production from new deposits will much more than offset decline of older producers the tariff act of 1913 changed the rate of import duty from 7 cents a pound to 10 per cent ad va lorem and it also seems unlikely that the importation of quicksilver will seriously interfere with the prosperity of properly developed domestic quicksilver deposits of real commercial value imports and exports exports of quicksilver from the united states for the calendar year 1913 are estimated from the records of the bureau oi of foreign and domestic commerce of the department part ment of commerce at pounds 1099 flasks flacks fl asks valued at in 1912 the exports were pounds valued at and in 1911 they were pounds valued at the imports entered for consumption are estimated for 1913 at pounds valued at against pounds valued at in 1912 and pounds valued at in 1911 the greater part of the imports for 1913 1911 a were received in the last half of the year and the abaye estimates may prove too high as exact records are available for only the first nine months of the year the record mine production of zinc ore and concentrates in idaho in 1913 increased I 1 the spelter output from pounds in 1912 to pounds in 1913 an increase of nearly 70 per cent the success mine was operated throughout the year and not only had an increased zinc output but preparation was made for using magnetic separation to eliminate the excess iron in the product at the morning mine a largely increased output was made by use of the macquisten tube flotation process the greenhill cleveland shipped crude zinc ore and made a separation of a zinc product by flotation at the mill at wallace probably the most important increase came from the interstate callahan property A new ton mill began operation in may and crude ore and concentrates of both lead and zinc were marketed in august 1016 tons were sent to smelters shelters sm elters largely zinc product at the hercules mill at wallace additions were also made for the separation of a zinc product little zinc ore or concentrate was marketed from the murray region but in blaine county important tonnage came from the minnie moore dump during the year the old frisco mine near gem was acquired and by the federal mining smelting smelling Sm elting company the property will probably add greatly to the future zinc output two smelting smelling sm elting plants within the state were active in 1913 one a lead plant at clayton now owned by the red bird smelting smelling Sm elting company and the other a copper matting plant at ivors ivers both are in custer county four dredges were operated two at idaho city and two in leahl lemhi county the construction st of a fifth one on e on bohannon bar i lemlie lemhi county was completed |
