mem-bers of the Legislature on Thursday evening a full account of which appeared ap-peared in The Berald on Friday morning morn-ing Many of the society people of the city can get points from the Judge and Mrs Powers in regard to entertaining If the atmosphere of cordiality and he utter lack of that dress parade outon exhibition bearing that mars otherwise delightful receptions were more general giving her a most delightful surprise at her new home at Forest Pale The clubs number nearly fifty ladies I I and most of them are friends of many years standing of the estimable lady I thus ° 5oref Hence the assemblage I had all the charm of a large family re union I I The roll was called and the members responded with quotations front the poems of which Mrs Wells is the au I I thor Dr Romania B Pratt then pre sented a magnificent bouquet her pre I sentation speech being a model of ele I gant diction and poetic thought Dr Ellis Shipp president of the Press club also with most appropriate remarks presented a gold pen and a new sub I scription roll for the Womans Expon ent of which Mrs Wells is the efficient I editor A sketch of her life eulogistic of her many good works and dwelling upon the esteem in which she is held not only in this city but wherever she is known was then read by Mrs A E Bennion of Taylorsville Miss Wood mansee read an original poem entitled Appreciation which described the rare qualities of the subject of the sketch Original poems by Mrs Ruth M Fox and Mrs Lydia Alder were also high tributes as was the Birthday Greeting by Mrs Hague of Wood land Mrs Wells in her response spoke feelingly of these remarks of es teem and love and expressed her heart I felt thanks Misses Druce Maud Pratt Olea Shipp Pearl Russell rendered some exquisite music Delicious refresh ments were served and the evening closed with hearty wishes for many returns of so happy a birthday A kaliedoscopic scene was that presented pre-sented by the merry party of maskers at Coopers
