Show ; ; By Dueret Telegraph Liuc. i HUN TING FOR IS FORMATION AT PKOVO. Provo, Jan. IS. General Maxwell came to the Court house on Monday with Judge Strickland, and invited Hon. W. H. Hooper's friends to represent rep-resent him at a session of the District Court, to be held at 2 p.m., for the purpose of taking evideuce in election matters, at Mr. Bullock's hotel. They were tendered the use of the Court house, but prefered tho hotel. At 2 p.m. an examination of four witnesses, viz, Robert A. Hill, Joseph A. Thompson, Samuel Bee and D. C. Roberts commenced. The main questions ques-tions asked were on points of the faith, doctrine and practice of the Latter-day Saints, and. on the method of conducting conduct-ing elections in Utah at elections prior to the last one; and a few questions about the last election. The first witness wit-ness demurred to signing his deposition deposi-tion as written by the Judge, unless an addendum was added, that his state: memt was only rumor. Two reporters were present, who took full notes. I'helGeneral instructed the Judge on the particular parts 8f the testimony he desired written, and in one case, at the request of a by stander, a fact testified to was inserted in the written deposition- The Court adjourned to the Court house at 7 p.m.,- but failed to meet. Last evening one of the reporters was at Mr. Bulluek's, and was Uild by General Maxwell that the investigation would be resumed immediately after the funeral of Mrs. Baehman, which took place yesterday; but on the reporter re-porter entering the room the investigation investiga-tion ceased. The witnesses present were told that the depositions on that land matter would be taken at Mr. Bachman's house. They then left for Mr. Bachman's and afterwards for Salt Lake City. |
