Show "UTAH KNOCKING AT THE DOOR." That is how the New York Herald expresses it, when a correspondent says that efforts are being made to have Utah admitted as a State. We are decidedly of the opinion that Utah has as good a right to be a member of the family of States as some others of the latest-introduced into that relationship relation-ship ; and a still better claim to it than some lor whom application . is now being made. She has more population pop-ulation than some of the present States; she is out of debt, and that is a novelty just now that entitles her to considerable considera-ble credit; she has shown ability to take care of herself by successfully prosecuting several Indian wars ; and she is just now opening up new fields of prosperity in the development ol her minerals, of which hor splendid foundation of agricultural, manufacturing manufac-turing and mechanical industries will enable her to reap the full benefit. Against these what objections can be urged? "Oh, the people of the present Territory and proposed State are not virtuous ; many of them believe in and practice polygamy !" Well, that's certainly something awful, considering how immaculately pure and virtuous the other States and Tsrritories are I And what makes it worse, the people of Utah are sincere and religious in their peculiar marital views, and have the strictest notions of virtue and chastity, which they honestly 6trive to observe; while the other States and Territories believe there horrid imoral-ities imoral-ities are damnable and vile, yet they keep practising them. They talk about them, preach against them, legislate for them, employ the power of the press against them; yet encourage encour-age them by actual practice ! Let us have consistency; and if Utah is to be denied her right to a State government because of immorality, apply the same ruie throughout the na'.ion. Whu,t is the use of- saying immorality immor-ality is frowned down aud placed under the ban of the law'.' It exists. Can legislation remove it? L)oes legislation legisla-tion compel morality? Why, St. Louis has tried te control the "social evil" by legalising it, and has failed. That is : A city of the United States has declared it is legal for a married man to have illicit intercourse with an unmarried wojaan, whose person, purity pur-ity and every womanly quality are prostituted, pros-tituted, destroyed and dammed under municipal regulation: but if that same man takes another woman as his wife, acts the part of an honest, honorable husband by her, owns, cares for and educates her children, and shuns dens of infamy as he would the leprosy, it would brand him as infamous and criminal ! Such is consistency ! Can legislation repress and control immorality? immor-ality? If it can, why is it not done? If it cannot, what right has any legislature legisla-ture to attempt the impossible? Jf it can be done, then commence the work of purification throughout the Union, and never stop until it is completed, beginning with the - most powerful States and the largest cities. If il cannot be done, then act consistently, and in the spirit of republicanism let Utah regulate her own morality, as other States do. All that should be required of Utah is, a strictly republican repub-lican Constitution in conformity with the spirit and letter of the Constitution Constitu-tion of the Federal Union. Demand this of her; require it of her people; sec that the rights of all are repectcd under that Constitution. Less than this would be a wrong perpetrated upon Americans; more would be a blow aimed at that which Americans ought to prize dearer than life : Republican Re-publican principles and institution-) ! |
