Forty eight percent of new cases and 55 percent of the deaths are among women 65 and older. More of the new cases are than 80 women who have no history of breast cancer in their family. However, if women follow their doctors advice and get mammogram periodically, cancer can be found early and chances of a cure will increase. Some women have said they dont have mammogram because theyve heard they are painful. The breast must be compressed for a few seconds to get a clear picture, and some women find this uncomfortable, but few say it hurts. Most health insurance companies provide at least partial coverage. For those 65 and older, Medicare also covers part of the cost. All women ages 50 and older should have a mammogram once each year. Its true that women who have a family history of cancer are somewhat more likely to get it. But 80 of the women diagnosed each year with breast cancer, have no history of the disease in their family.
