Others dug deeper and gave more, he stressed. Looking ahead five years Davis County United Way hopes to double its contribution total while also doubling the volunteer effort. We need this kind of result for our community, Mr. Duncan said. He recalled how the idea for United Way originated with a priest and Jewish rabbi in Denver 100 years ago. The pair wanted to coordinate an assistance effort for those devastated by the gold rush crash there. Mayor McKenzie recalled his United Way experiences when hed visit those agencies and the people benefited by pledges. He praised Davis Executive Director Larry Burdett, noting he may know hell never reach the ultimate goal but he gets close enough (to be successful). A buffet, centennial stamp ceremony commemorating United Ways 100 years and proclamation ceremony were also featured. In addition, Terri Burdett related her experiences at the young leaders conference in Washington, D.C. while Jerry Moffitt recalled activities at the volunteer leaders conference. It was also a time to honor the hundreds of volunteers who donate countless hours to United Way. Dozens of United Way of Davis County supporters braved threatening weather as they celebrated the agencys 100th birthday last Thurday. Meeting in the open air of Laytons Commons Parks, backers of the volunteer organization heard words of encouragement from Allison Barlow, Davis High School graduate and Layton resident, and Layton Mayor Richard McKenzie. Ms. Barlow of Channel 5 news emceed the program while other touches were added by the Layton High School band, HAFB color guard and Clearfield Job Corps Rangers. This years campaign chairman, Jim Duncan, noted how Davis Countys United Way started in 1974. Thanks to pioneering efforts of then County Commissioner Stanley Smoot, the agency raised about $34,000 that first year. Thats a far cry from the $484,000 raised this past year and the $3.5 million donated over the past 13 years, he emphasized. The $484,000 raised in this past campaign is especially noteworthy because of the 1,269 job layoffs. That normally wouldve brought about $70,000 United Ways direc y. Those included the 1986 campaign cabinet: Mr. Duncan, Albertsons Distribution Center manager in North Salt Lake; Wilson J.
