Show SEPTEMBER 29, 1987 L, Lancers nip Weber in thriller By KEITH DUNCAN LAYTON In the middle of the summer, Layton coach Tom Moore had either Bonneville or Roy picked as the teams to beat in this falls Region One football showdown. Gosh, knew we could be competitive, but I kept questioning whether our running backs could do the job. Id been spoiled by having Richard Lovelace and William Reid the year before and I just didnt know whether we could do an effective enough job to be competitive with the likes of the Lakers and the Royals, said Moore. Its now three months later and its amazing what has transpired. 1 A quick glance at the standings and youd be shocked. The Lakers and the Royals are toying with disaster as both programs have been blanked in the win column after two weeks of play. The other shocker is the Layton running game led by seniors Tom Moore, Keith Lawrence and Sahn Johnson. These three have helped make Layton a force to reckon with. Their (the running backs) latest triumph came last Friday night in Pleasant View where they collectively gained 315 yards rushing to help Layton to a 4 victory over the Weber Warriors. Lawrence scrambled for 147 yards on 22 carries while Moore carried the ball 26 times for 127 yards. Both scored touchdowns in the winning effort. Johnson, still nursing a tender shoulder injury sustained against Highland, was very effective as he gained 4 yards on just four carries. 21-1- 1 But the credit for the running games success certainly cant stop with the running backs. Going into the Weber contest, the coaches felt theyd have a definite size advantage against the Warriors defensive line and thats exactly the way " 7, ", , fy f ,:A yt nappened. With the likes of Jason Barker, Mike Judkins, Tyler Sessions, David Jolley, John Yeates and Rick Sparks around, the Lancer offensive line moved Weber people around like nobodys business and created some wide open holes for the backs in the process. Once we got our confidence in what we came to do, 35-1- said Moore, there really wasnt any way they were going to stop us. On Laytons second possession, Troy Murray brought his teammates to their own 41 yard line and just five plays later the Layton team was scoring their first TD of the game. Lawrence gained 44 of those yards including the touchdown from 17 yards out with 3:32 Layton flexed its muscles offenin first Muthe sively again in the opening drive of remaining quarter. the second half as they went 14 rrays PAT was good and Layton led plays and 91 yards for a score that eventually made it Every We should have scored a few other play it was either Moore or more times in the first half, in fact Lawrence ramming it up the midwe should have beat them (Weber) dle or getting a little around the 7-- 0. 14-- 0. ends. Finally it was Moore scoring on a one yard burst. But Weber hasnt been ranked in the top five for nothing either as they came right back on eight plays of their own and 79 yards to score their first touchdown of the game. Speedy Trent Workman did most of the damage; in fact, it was he who caught the touchdown pass from Chris McGarry that resulted in Webers first score, The Weber score put some fire into the Layton offense because Murray and Co. came right back and answered with another touchdown off a 70 yard drive. 26-ya- pered all the way to Webers line. One play later he took it to the Weber 2 on a nine yard carry. rd With 9:21 remaining in the game, Murray used a QB sneak play to score Laytons final TD. Steverson rose to the occasion on the following series as the Layton defensive end made a spectacular QB sack of McGarry. Defensive back Mike Todd helped snuff out the threatening Weber drive with a key interception. But the Layton offense broke down for a moment and had to turn the ball back to Weber with three minutes remaining. The Warriors made the best of a good punt return and took advantage of Layton penalty to start their final drive from N-g- ai Some of the key plays in the third scoring drive included a Murray to Larry Canterella pass for 12 yards Laytons 30 yard line with 2:26 left. that picked up a valuable first down A couple of plays later, Workman early on. Despite the fact Layton couldnt score more than a touchdown in the first half, the offense was still able to move the ball up and down the field. And the defense has its moments as well. Derrick Stapley recovered an early Weber fumble and Murray intercepted a pass. Barker had a quarterback sack that was breathtaking, in fact the very same one that caused the Murray interception. Both Mike Barnes and Terry Moore had solid first halves as well. it '$&' p'', two surprising teams, Layton and Clearfield tangle. A win over Layton on Friday would certainly put them in the drivers seat toward capturing a state playoff spot and perhaps even winning the Region One football crown. Layton meanwhile has demonstrated some excellent concentration and poise while being the states No. 1 ranked football team. Right now most of the Layton team is looking forward to an undefeated season with just three games left on the season schedule. So dont miss it. Whether youll be in Clearfield or Kaysville, there are a couple of dandies for local fans to watch. 2-- By KEITH DUNCAN 9-- A couple of key region football games are on tap for this weekend as Bountiful visits Davis and Layton travels to Clearfield. Both games will do a lot to determine key playoff spots down the road. Four teams enter the playoffs from Region One this fall and three enter from Region Four. hard-nose- Bountiful-Davi- s match-up- s are always interesting, no matter what the details. This year will be no different. The Braves are back on the winning track after beating East, But while Davis has played twice in Region Four and are there is little question that the Darts are entering into the meat of their Region Four schedule with both the Braves and Highland still to test. The Darts have certainly had the Braves number even since Region Four was aligned. Fro i year No. 1 , Davis has failed to lose to a Bountiful team in Region Four competition and you can bet that Jim Dickson and Co. will be trying to keep it that way. Over in Region One, there is the battle of the undefeated as PHOTO BY GARY BLODGETT SHARIF HADLEY Bountifuls Sharif Hadley displayed one of the most spectacular one-ma- n rushing performances in modern prep history in Davis County as he rambled for 263 yards on 1 7 carries and three touchdowns. The Braves will play Davis at Kaysvil-l- e on Friday. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. CLEARFIELD Brent The Comforts Fate of Provo Canyon On Tuesday, Sept. 29, at 7:30 p.m., at the Copperview Community Center the Stonefly Society will present a public meeting on the future of Provo Canyon and the Provo River. Present status of planning for highway construction will be presented by a representative of the Division of Wildlife Resources. They will then be available to answer questions and listen to opinions regarding these plans. Current plans call for a four-lan- e divided highway through the entire canyon such as Weber and Parleys Canyons. Waterfowl hunters need to take a minute and review the new waterfowl regulations as many changes have occurred since last year. Davis, Cache, Salt Lake, and the western portion of Box Elder county have been added as steel shot only areas. This means that all waterfowl hunting in these counties must be done with steel shot. Lead shot coated with nickle or copper is still considered illegal. Hunters possessing lead shot while hunting waterfowl will be ticketed. There were and are several other counties also closed to lead shot last year and these will still remain closed. For the first time in Utah water-fo- hunting will be done by the split season method. Hunting will be allowed from Oct. 3 to Dec. 6 and then again between Dec. 21 and Jan. 3, 1988. This means that there will be a 15 day period in which waterfowl hunting will be the age of 16 are required to be supervised by a parent or legal guardian 21 years of age or older depending if the person hunting is under 14 or between 14 and 15. This adult supervision helps to guard against juvenile tendencies to shoot at protected birds and disobedience of waterfowl hunting regulations. Bag limits are the same as last year which allow for the taking of five ducks provided that no more than four mallards or four pintails or any combination of each totaling four as long as no more than one hen mallard or one hen pintail are taken. No more than two redheads or two canvasbacks or one of each CONTINUED 26-2- 7 Ahead at halftime, Clearfield was successful in driving to paydirt in their first possession of the second half. It was a beautiful scoring strike from Tim Gardner to Bracken Larsen that, lead. And gave Clearfield a before that quarter was history, Clearfield had scored again and took an impressive 7 lead into the final eight minutes of play. Of course the Falcons had to hold on as Roy scored two fourth quarter touchdowns to eventually close the gap. 10-- I low. A e undivided plan which would be more narrow has been rejected. Highway department planners also appear adamantly opposed to dropping to a two or three lane highway through narrow, critical sections of the canyon. Hunters will again be required to purchase, sign, and have on person both federal and state duck stamps if they are 6 years or older.
