Wehave pondered your views on the use of nuclear weapons, the nation’s economy, extremism, Social Security, civil rights, the income tax... And we have asked ourselves: Is your kind of thinking really wise for America as a whole, and for Utah in particular? defense, we ido not object. But so many otherleaders, military andcivilian, flatly disagree with you. @ Wehavelistened to you time after time make startling statements on manythings — thenlater, explain, qualify, explain, confuse, explain... @ Then, too, Senator, reclamation projects mean a great deal to the state of Utah, just as they do to Arizona. But we wonder if you have a separate standard for Arizona projects, in view of .@ And wehave said to ourselves: This does not have the ring of responsible leadership. your votes against funds for the Weber Basin Project, Provo River @ Wehavelistened to you assail the state of our liberties, of - Project, Central Utah Project, Flaming Gorge and Glen Canyon, while at the same time advocating Federal construction of the Central Arizona Project in your homestate. our morals and of law and order — and yet yourentire solution is simply to elect you President, then miraculously, everything will be all right. i @ The economic boom that began in 1961 has lasted longer than anyother in U.S. peace-time history. Yet, Senator, you advocate drastic economic schemes which can onlylead to unemployment and depression. This is no timeto rock the boat. @ We have heard you castigate the’ United States Supreme Court — such attacks not based on reasoned, responsible criticism, but on the theory that anyone whose views don’t correspond with yours is completely lacking in integrity. : @ When you were nominated, Senator, we worried that the extremist element might take over your campaign — and, alas, we see our fears justified by the sale of ultra-extremist paperback books (‘A Texan Looks At Lyndon,” “‘None Dare Call It Treason,” and “‘A| Choice Not An Echo”) in your headquarters in Salt Lake City, and even in Republican headquarters here. We have waited in vain for you to denounce these publications or disassociate yourself from them. These’are the books which Republican Governor Robert E. Smylie of Idaho haslabelled as “smut,” and s @ And we have heard you here in Salt Lake City’s great Tabernacle incredibly try to persuade us somehow that President Johnson and the Democratic Party disregard God andreligion. We quote you: “This is a matter of even greater regret when we realize that this (Democratic Party) platform, with its utter disregard of God, was written to the exact specifications of Lyndon Johnson.” @ We have wondered, Senator: Are these the statements of a responsible leader who aspires to become President of this great Nation? which Republican Governor John Anderson, Jr. of Kansas and other responsible Republicans have called “dirty politics.” @ But most ofall, Senator, we Utahns, like other Americans, @ You have us. bewildered, Senator. But what is more, you have us frightened. worry about, your casual remarks on the use and control of nuclear weapons ... that the awful word on where and when to use atomic weapons should be given, not by the President of the United States, but by a Commanderoutside of the country —a decision, by|the way, that the Supreme NATO commander ‘believes only the President should make. @ Besides your oftén-stated views on nuclear weapons, extremism;brinksmanship and many more, we, as Utahns, worry about what would happen to the economy of our ownstate if you were ‘in a position to carry out your views. @ Make no mistake, Senator, all Americans — not only your followers — are for a strong America. We support nuclear deterrence under |mature and responsible leadership. But not an immature obsession with nuclear weaponty... not swashbuckling brinksmanship with hundredsof millions of lives at stake. @ From the last explanation we heard, Senator, we gather you you would eliminate the farm program — which,of course, would automatically eliminate many Utah farms. @ We're worried about employmenthere in Utah, Senator, and if you were to persist in de-emphasis of the missile industry in favor of manned bombers it could gravely affect the jobs of some 15,000 Utahns. Of coturse, if that’s the right course’ for national @ Here, Senator, you leave us no choice. In our hearts we feel you're wrong, The stakes are too high for youto stay home. ote for President Johnson on Nov. 3 pei foie Arthur E.
