Anglers terested in such a dream trip next summer should make plans now. Most lodges in the Far North will be filled soon. See story for details. white toilet seat It's Time to Prepare To Fish Great Slave By HARTT WIXOM Herald Outdoor Writer In any January, July seems a long way off. But, plans are being made in tah to go next July to Great Slave Lake, North-West Territories, Canada. This area has been publicized in Utah before, anent visit of Frontier Lodge (135 miles east of Nearest road at Yellowknife, NWT) owner manager Ji Bricker. His (free) films on cate! giant lake trout, Northern pike, and Arctic grayling have been shown for the years in both Provo and Salt Lake City. Bricker (and most Far North lodge owners for that matter) will soon fill all remaining slots in a short season running from July 1 to Sept. 10. First come, first served. I have been to GreatSlave three previous times, aNd have scheduled thattrip again for July of1980. So, if you would like to accompy me onthis one, contact me at 2635 . 4510 South, Holladay, Utah, 84117. This is not a commercial venture, simply a fisherman service. I can Tememberthe first time up that way, seeking out answers, catching flights etc., so, if you have always wanted to take a ‘dream trip of a lifetime,” but preferred a guide, here is your chance. Just to answer tte first question, total cost, includingair fare to and from’Salt LakeCity,is $1,800. That is what it costs to fish Great Slave, unless you drove up and putin your own boat. If that is your bag, prepare carefully. Alsc, expect to pay moreif attempting to go further north, Say to Great Bear or Colville Lakes. You can also obtain a list of lodge owners directly by writing to TravelArctic, a government-operated travel bureau, in Yellowknife, or the’ Canadian Travel Bureau for Canada in General, at Ottawa. No more addressis needed, at last communication. Anglers depart on a Friday, are fishing the same day of departure, and leave one week and a daylater, on Saturday. For further information, you can write directly to Frontier Lodge owner Jerry Bricker, Box 449, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Whatyou can expectat GreatSlave’s far eastern tip is lake trout galore, some up to 30, 40, and even 50% Ibs. Pike can be taken on a regular troutfly rod to 40 inches (I have one on my wall at home 40% inches). But, moreoften, because of their tackle-busting tendencies, pike are taken on spoons and lures, via spin rods. Arctic grayling are as big here as anywhere in the North. You can catch up to 60, 80, or even a hundred ontheright night. Of course, it doesn’t get dark here in July until near- < 19° The right fly for these grayling is a mosier, tied right here in Utah. None of the Far North lodges, while amply equipped with lures, really carry an adequate supply of grayling flies. If you're a fly fisherman (my preference), you should begin stocking up at the local tackle shops. These grayling are not difficult to catch in the 1418 inch category, but the three to fe jers become morefastidious in their feeding habits, and demand greater skills. Some anglersfigurethis expedition is even worth advance financing. Well, that’s up to you. But, after a $200 de it to protect yourreservation, the lance can be paid in July. That has to be worked outwith the lodge. But, planning now, there is six months to getit salted away. There are other lodges you might plan to visit. It is just that I can personally vouchfor Frontier. It has excellent food, personalized service, good lecal Indian guides, excellent fishing. Many Utahns have returned many times. If you wantto be included for 1980, here is your chance “We started making man-made snow ona test basis last weekfor the crosscountry trails.
