Show Page 8 - THE HERALD, Provo, Utah, 18, 1983 Sunday, September mm Prep Roundup Spanish Fork Dumps Lehi Continued from Page 7. Friday night against Lehi. "We were just standing around in the first half," said Don head Dave Clark. "They were taking the game to us early. Lehi has a fine football team and are going to beat some teams in this region." On the first play from scrimmage for Spanish Fork, halfback Joel Johnson took a hand-of- f on the right side of the line, broke one tackle, and then rumbled 80 yards down the sideline for the first score of the contest. Johnson was the offensive star of the game with 116 yards rushing on only 12 carries, and he also scored three touchdowns. But then it looked as if the Pioneers from Lehi were going to run away with the game. Tney scored the next 21 points as they converted three fumbles, two of which were on punts, into scoring drives. The Pioneers used the battering runs of fullback Andy Madson and the timely passing of quarterback Bob Lucero to jump out to the advantage. Corey Downs returned a Johnson fumble 25 yards for a score, and that gave Lehi the 21 to 7 advantage. y But the Don man Scott Hanks returned the ensuing kick-of- f 65 yards to give Spanish good field position. Alex Morrill scored from 21 yards out, and it was 4 at the half. But in the second half, it was all Spanish Fork. The Pioneers had big-pla- 21-1- zero net yards for the final 30 minutes. "In the first half, we were just standing around," commented Clark. "We'd hit their backs, and they would just bounce off and go for extra yardage. In the second half, we just decided to play football. "Also," he continued, "we were able to put good pressure on their quarterback. We cut down on our mistakes, and that helped. "Plus, I think they got a little tired at the end. Lehi doesn't have too many people, and I think that took its toll in the end," Clark concluded. The Dons tied it up on a screen pass from Kent Hartley to Johnson on fourth down. Enter Hanks once again. The senior caught his g touchdown pass in as many weeks from Hartley nd tne uons never looked back. A final touchdown bv Johnson with 1:09 left was the icing on the cane. 22-ya-rd 5-- Lehi 7 14 SpFork 7 7 SF L L L 13 - 1- -33 - HEBER CITY 80 kick) Madson 3 run (Duncan kick) Downs 25 fumble return (Duncan kick) Morrill 21 run ( Nelson kick ) SF SF Johnson 22 pass form Hartley (Nelson kick) SF Hanks 28 pass from Hartley (run failed) SF Johnson 2 run (kick failed) SF Lehi 12 8 First Downs 63 Yds.
