" the Knights. survived a L ipleasani in n over L ..t Grove SSS-inBing rally April 5 Cwin 4-3 on the Union Cougars' Roosevelt field. In the Timpanogos game Vikings icgiaicicu seven hits as they contained the Timberwolves. Pleasant Grove coach Jeff Wilson said, Rachel Hartgrove and Jennie Thurston each hit a double for us in the game. Our runs were spread out across the game." The win over Timpanogos set Pleasant Grove up for a showdown with Lone Peak for sole possession pos-session of first place in the region. Like the Vikings, the Knights had posted a shutout win on the road April 2. While Pleasant Grove was busy trying to keep a lid on the Timberwolves, the Knights trampled the Orem Tigers 10-0 on the Orem diamond to take a 2-0 league record into the April 4 game against the Vikings. In the Lone Peak contest, Wilson said, We played solid defense. We'd been practicing practic-ing our hitting. It paid off today. Our girls are humble. They know anybody can beat anybody else in the region. So they came ready to play today." The Vikings had a special reason to be prepared for their game against the Knights: Lone Peak pitcher Jordan Fox. Her pitching helped Lone Peak do very well in region and exhibition exhibi-tion games. Wilson said, She played with our girls in summer 1 'the " ' TT'TB' I II I II f:'Ai ' v.- fir 1 V 1 ball. They know her weaknesses, weak-nesses, and she knows theirs." The contest unfolded with Becky Gwilliam hitting hit-ting a left-field double off Fox. After center fielder Nikki Savage picked off a fly ball from No. 2 batter Thurston, Hartgrove doubled dou-bled in Gwilliam. Fox didn't let the Vikings go on a scoring rally that inning. After the pitcher struck out Chelsea Sondrup, right fielder Lindsey Chatfield picked off a Jennie Scoville fly ball. Though pitcher Scoville walked leadoff batter Sara Walker in the bottom of the inning, she held Lone Peak in check. The first round set the tone for what the game's opening three innings would be like. Getting on base through a second-inning error, Dani Sirkel scored the second Viking run on Halsie Carson's sacrifice ground-out. ground-out. Lone Peak tried answering answer-ing that run when Hillary Welch smacked a two-out, ground ball into center in the bottom of the second, but first baseman Sondrup grounded out Savage. The next inning, Sondrup tripled in Thurston on one out. After that RBI, Fox held the Viking lead to 3-0 until the seventh. In the meantime, Scoville didn't let the Knights capitalize on crucial plays like Walker's third-inning single. In the sixth, Walker got on base again, this time on an error, but she became snared in a double play resulting from Sondrup's catch of a Chatfield line fly. In the seventh, Gwilliam scored an in-the-park homer to spark a four-run rally, highlighted by Hartgrove's two-run double and Scoville's one-run single. sin-gle. Lone Peak staged a double dou-ble play to end the rally, but they never recovered from it. At the Union game, Wilson said, Rachel Hartgrove hit Chelsea Sondrup twice for our first two runs. In the fifth, Hartgrove hit a double to bring in Becky Gwilliam and Jennie Thurston." The coach said that in the seventh, Our girls relaxed on defense. Union loaded the bases, and a batter bat-ter cleared them with a double. dou-ble. "This time, we managed to pull out a win, though. We had a lot of scoring opportunities, but we kept leaving people on base all through the game." Region play continues this afternoon, as Mountain View visits. The Vikings go to Orem on Tuesday. "We made good passes like we were supposed to. We kept oufhcool as we worked the ball around them." Not only was the game the first time that Pleasant Grove and Orem had played each other since the early '9Qs, it was also the Vikings' first-ever win over the Tigers. The strong unity that thVikings showed on thfield enabled them to teep Orem from getting-ahead of them in the first half. Viking goalie Brock DgGraff helped to maintain the unity by npf cracking under great pressure brought on-him by Tigers Alson Lifldstrom, Devin Davidson, and Johannas Gapmeyer. JJeGraff didn't let any of the Tigers' seven shots on goal cross the goal line during the afternoon. Viking stopper stop-per Paul Kennington, too, came up with his share of saves during the game. DeGraff's efforts alone couldn't win the game for the Vikings. They had to kick the ball across the goal line. Doing that proved to be impossible for them in the first half, as Orem goalie Sean Jeffs kept them scoreless. Late in the second half( Viking Ryan Palmer opened a decisive deci-sive attack. During it, teammate Tanner Gibb headed the ball into the net from inside the penalty box. Gibb then made the score 2-0 when Brett Waters passed to him for a last-minute goal. For the second goal, Gibb said, "I just intimidated intim-idated the goalie, and then kicked the ball in." Lynch said, "This win is great for our school and for our community."
