I was born and reared in Spanish Fork and since Ive been knee-hig- h on a tall Indian, Ive heard people speak of Native Sons. I grew up with the idea that there was something special about being born in a city. I was a big boy before I realized that some Native Sons remained in a town because they didnt have enough sense of money to leave there. Just how can the area in which one is born make a difference in the person as an individual? What if a poor feller were born in Silver City, Kennelworth, Mammoth, Spring Canyon or other towns that no longer exist; must he be discriminated against because he sinks his roots in Payson or Spanish Fork? If the man owns property, pays taxes, loves his family, what more can he give of himself? This Native Son business sorta reminds me of people bragging about their pioneer ancestors being numbered in the first group to come into the Salt Lake Valley. I dont think those men and women were any stronger than the second or their groups or even those who came a few years later, pulling the handcarts. They were all great Americans, be they first, second or third. Its fortunate that the people of Illinois didnt discriminate against Abraham Lincoln because he was born in Kentucky or he may never have been President of the United States. George Romney became governor of Michigan and the poor kid was born in Utah. Big towns dont care where a man is born; the man that counts. J. Bracken Lee has now been mayor of Salt Lake City for many terms; its the big town didnt mind that he was born in Carbon County. I brought my wife to Spanish Fork from Salt Lake City when she was 20. It took a little time to get the big town out of her blood, but I believe shed now fight for the welfare of this crazy town harder than I would. This business about Native Sons," has bothered me for a long time, but Ive hesitated writing about it because I know it is a favorite item in the minds of many old timers, Native Sons, and some of the now generation. But when we look around us, we can see that its not just Native Sons that have made our towns what they are; many adopted sons have contributed to our betterment in medicine, education, business, agriculture, etc., etc. America is the Great Melting Pot and its the mavericks that have contributed their share in making her a great land. Our little towns are suffering growing pains and when we all get through the period of considering where a man is born before we vote for him or support him, rather than consider what he has accomplished after he arrived, our South Utah County towns will find their places in the sun. There Ive said it. I didnt exactly want to, but I did and Im not sorry. Some smart feller wrote this pertaining to death: It isnt the fact that youre dead that counts; its how did you die and why. One might say the same about life: It isnt the fact that you were born that counts, its how did you live and why. The opinions expressed above are not those of my editor; they are my own.
