Show Task Force Studies Feasibility of Middle School for Park City . -'r''r--:' """" With the addition of 50 new students this year, the Marsac Elementary School is bursting at the seams. The crowded conditions, condi-tions, lack of sufficient money to build another elementary school, and the fact that the present high school is about to be vacated have stimulated ideas of a middle school in Park City. A middle school is not the same thing as a junior high. It encompasses grades 5 through 8, and, ideally, helps to provide an easy transition between elementary element-ary and high school. - It is felt that children during this period (ages 10 to 14) have special needs as they are bombarded with physical, emotional, emo-tional, intellectual, and social changes. It is a time of feeling awkward and unsure, confused by changing needs and desires. Restlessness and fluctuating emotional patterns are an integral part of this period of development. develop-ment. Inappropriate discipline measures could easily result due to a lack of understanding. It is vital that these children have teachers who are responsive and supportive. Middle school teachers ideally would have received special training to aid them in understanding the needs of this age group. At the last Park City School Community Council, pros and cons of the middle school concept -were discusses. Betty Roach was appointed to head a task force to evaluate the possibility of a middle school for Park City. The task force will focus on what advantages it would provide for our children, and whether it is financially feasible.
