Runaway truck kills driver, barely misses another car A Heber man was killed Jan. 3 when the cement truck he was driving driv-ing plowed into the bank of Poison Creek after the vehicle's brakes failed fail-ed while descending Aerie Drive. Fred. E. Elmer, 33, was pronounced pronounc-ed dead at the scene of the accident, said Park City Police Chief Frank Bell. Bell said a witness told police the truck's brakes were smoking as it came down the steep grade with almost a full load of cement at about 3:40 p.m. Elmer made a radio call to the office of Geneva Rock Products, which owns the truck, saying he was riding a runaway, said Bell. The chief said the Geneva truck narrowly missed a passenger car as it crossed Deer Valley Drive. As the truck crashed into the rocky west bank of the creek, the loaded cement barrel was launched from the truck, crushing the cab and coming to rest in the Park Station condominium lot. The driver was crushed and had to be cut from the cab, Bell said. The truck was traveling the wrong way on Aerie Drive, which is a one-way street. |
