Mr. Nixon, the first American president to step down from the high office, cited the erosion of his political base in Congress as the reason for his resignation. He stated, I would say if some of my judgments were wrong - and some were wrong - they were made in what I believed at the time to be in the best interests of the nation. During the historic address, the former president made no mention of specific charges stemming from Watergate. I have never been a quitter, Mr. Nixon stated, but he said rather than fight for his vindication, he would relinquish his office in the best interests of the country. 17-min- ute Nixon was forced from the White House after he made public a tape recording of a conversation between himself and aide H.R. Haldeman. The tape reveals that Nixon attempted to thwart an F.B.I. inHe had vestigation of Watergate only six days after the break-in- . previously refused to make the tape available, but it is reported his attorney, Mr. James St. Clair, threatened to resign if the recording was not surrendered. Friday, August 9th, Gerald R. Ford took the oath of office and became the 38th President of the United States. Mr. Ford immediately met with congressional leaders, former Nixon aides, economic advisors, diplomats, and personal associates. Mr. Ford promised a government characterized by candor. On One of President Fords first orders of business will be to select a Vice President. He has solicited suggestions from members of Congress, governors, and Republican National Committee members. Frequently mentioned names include Nelson Rockefeller, Barry Gold-wate- r, and Melvin Laird. Meanwhile, Nixons first choice for Vice President after Spiro Agnews resignation, John Carnally, pleaded innocent on Friday, August 9th, to charges of taking illegal payoffs, conspiracy to obstruct justice, and perjury. If there is any doubt, I plead not guilty to al counts, Mr. Connally said loudly to a packed U.S. District Court. BANGLADESH As monsoon flood waters engulfed the eastern portion of the Indian subcontinent, half of Bangladesh was covered by water. The death toll in that country is listed at 2,000 and the raging flood has affected the lives and well-bein- g of 30 million people. Some areas are reported to be near famine as natives fight dogs for scraps of food. Premier Bulent Ecevit of Turkey admonished that any agreement reached in Geneva would be unacceptable if Greek partisans refused to vacate Turkish strongholds and did not release Turkish prisoners. Although hope for a settlement has not been extinguished, both sides are preparing for a resumption of fighting if the talks fail. ISRAEL Lebanon and Israel voiced the possibility of a new Middle East war after an Israeli gunboat and Arab guerillas clashed. Israeli spokesmen reported guerillas aboard a rubber boat opened fire on an Israeli naval vessel near the Lebanese border on Saturday, August 10th! The rubber dinghy was sunk and there was no word on survivors. On Sunday, August 11th, Israel announced it would conduct a y mobilization of all military reservists. The mobilization is being staged in the event of renewed warfare with the Arabs. one-da- THE MIDWEST The drought-stricke- n Midwest finally received rain on Friday, August 9th. For two months, most sections of the nations breadbasket were baked by hot, dry winds, and farmers watched as corn crops withered and died. It is hoped the recent downpour will save the soybean crop and restore pasturelands. LEWISBURG, PA. Richard Floyd McCoy, Jr., a former Green Beret who hijacked a n airplane in April of 1972 and parachuted out over Provo, escaped from Lewisbiirg Federal Penitentiary on Saturday, August 10th. Mr. McCoy and three other prisoners made their break by commandeering a garbage truck. SPORTS Talkative and talented Lee Trevino refused to fold under pressure and won the 56th Professional Golfers Association National Championship on Sunday, August 11th. Shooting a final round of 69 for a 276 total, Trevino garnered his fifth title. Finishing second to the Merry Mex was Jack Nicklaus. His failure to win the PGA marked the first big time since 1969 that the golf great failed to win one of the Big Four tournaments. Two of the greats from the proud New York Yankees past were inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame on Monday, August 12th. Friends and teammates Mickey Mantle and Whitey Ford were bestowed the games highest honor. Along with Mantle and Ford, Sunny Jim Sam Thompson, Jocko Conlan, and Cool Papa Bell had their names placed in the shrine. Bot-tomle- y, CYPRUS Thousands of Turkish war prisoners were freed by Greek Cypriot forces on Sunday, August 11th. This was viewed as a move to salvage the Geneva peace talks which have come to a standstill. In Ankara, The National Football League Players Association, after striking for 41 days, has asked its members to report to training camp.
