Show Volume III, Issue I THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 15 November 1, 2000 On November 7th, you will be choosing someone to represent you on the Weber County Commission. My Democratic opponent has made many allegations that are misrepresentations of the truth and deserve to be addressed. For the record....... MISREPRESENTATION FACT “Commissioner Burton missed or canceled 33 of 101 Commission meetings in 1999.” I attended 90% of the scheduled Commission meetings. The other meetings were canceled due to Commissioners representing the county at other meetings or lack of official business. I understand the importance of good representation of our county at other meetings and not wasting your tax dollars holding Commission meetings with no agenda items! “Commissioners ignored and violated the Utah Code procedures in the sale of public land.” With the advice and recommendation of county officials, Commissioners followed all Utah Code and County policies for surplus land sales. The real facts about the county’s land sales have been manipulated by my Democratic opponent to aid his lawsuit against the county. The county is committed to good government and improving our policies to make good decisions. “Commissioners used tax dollars to subdivide and speculate on land on Midland Drive.” Land on Midland Drive was funded out of the Landfill Fund to build the Solid Waste Transfer Station. Commercial businesses in the area requested the Transfer Station be relocated. In response to that request, another location was found. In order to reimburse the Landfill Fund, it was necessary to make improvements on that Midland Drive land for resale purposes. It was a wise use of tax dollars for economic development as well as honoring the county’s commitment to local businesses. “Debt service has increased from under $600,000 in 1993 to over $2.4 million by 1999.” Because of prudent fiscal management, we were able to decrease the Weber County certified tax rate this year. The Conference Center bonds were refinanced, saving you a million dollars and 911 emergency service districts were consolidated which will save you $8 million over the next 10 years. Yes, our debt service has increased because the people of Weber County voted to build the Sheriff’s Complex—-which was completed on time, on budget! “Commissioners failed to apply for LeRay McAllister Open Land funds in 1999.” Weber County had no money in the budget in 1999 for the matching amount required by the recipient, without a tax increase. However, we were able to include this in the budget for next year and have already made application for this funding. In addition we have been supportive partners with our community pathways groups for open land preservation and projects. You deserve a Commissioner who will be honest with you and serve you with integrity, not one who manipulates facts to deceive you. My commitment to you is to serve you with honesty, integrity and willingness to make the tough decisions. I am asking for your vote on November 7th. Paid for by The People to Elect Glen Burton |
