This competition exhibit will open Friday, July 6 and continue on display through Thursday, August 30, 2007. Opening in our Carriage House Gallery on the same evening will be an exhibit featuring paintings by Farrell R. Collett. The 33rd Annual Statewide, a juried competition, will feature recent works by Utah artists in all media except photography. Photography is included in Biennial Black & White (scheduled for February 2008) and Photography Statewide Competitions (scheduled for 2009). This is always a varied and interesting exhibition. Awards presented at the reception will include monetary awards of First, Second, Third, as well as the Purchase Award. For the Purchase Award, the juror, Stephen “Woody” Shepherd, Associate Professor of Drawing and Painting at Utah State University and the center’s Board of Directors, will choose a piece of art to be included into the center’s permanent collection. The Eccles Community Art Center’s permanent collection is rotated throughout the auxiliary rooms and third floor galleries, as well as being the source for much of the art that is taken into local schools by the center’s excellent docent program Art To Go. Farrell R. Collett was one of Utah’s most successful and well-known painters. His work has been exhibited in galleries from coast to coast and in Canada. His work has been widely collected. The Collett Family through the Carriage House Gallery is exhibiting and making available to collectors a limited selection of his paintings. Farrell R. Collett touched many lives both as a teacher and as an artist. He often said, “A work of art is only half completed unless it is shared by others.” Farrell was a work of art personified, as he, throughout his life, continually strived to share himself with others: his lovely wife, his family, his students, and the world at large. Farrell R. Collett was a professor of art for 30 years and Chairman of the Art Department at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah. He earned his BA and MFA degrees at Brigham Young University. He did additional study at the University of Utah; The University of California, Los Angeles; the Art Center College of Design, Los Angeles; The Art Student’s League, New York City; The Art Institute and the American Academy of Art in Chicago; and the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco, California. He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Humanities by Weber State University. Weber State University presents an art scholarship in his name. The Eccles Community Art Center’s regular gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; and Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The center is closed Sundays and major holidays including Independence and Statehood days.
