At about 12:30 p.m., a team of six firefighters were called from the local station, responding with two brush tucks, one fire truck and one ambulance. The fire, which started at the north side of the highway across from Magpie Campground in South Fork Canyon, spread up the steep, rocky terrain to cover about 20 acres. Three additional crewmembers assigned to the Eden station were brought in to help battle the blaze. Eden Balloon and Arts Fest Flies High By Jeannie Wendell Ogden Valley News Ogden Valley’s Eden Park hosted yet another successful Balloon and Arts Fest the last weekend in August. This year’s theme was “Wild, Wild West.” Now in its eighth year, the balloon festival was expanded to three full days—running all day Friday and Sunday, in addition to Saturday. This year’s event was sponsored by the Ogden Valley Sports and Recreation Program, with all proceeds from the event going to local youth recreation programs. The Balloon Fest hosted 30 colorful hot air balloons that took to the air to compete for cash and prizes. “Hopper T. Frog” made a return visit as this year’s only “shape” balloon. A Wonder Bread balloon, celebrating the company’s 80th anniversary, joined a host of others in a spectacular display across the autumn sky in beautiful Ogden Valley on August 23, 24 and 25. Scores of cars and people converged around Eden Park, to enjoy live entertainment, great food, and displays and demonstrations showcased, not only in the sky, but in the many booths around the park. According to this year’s coordinator Linda Gillespie, the event attracted about 70,000 visitors. This year’s weather cooperated, providing a beautiful background for the vast array of colorful balloons that launched Saturday and Sunday. On Friday evening, Pilot “Smiley” James Richardson singed three panels of his balloon “Faith” just trying to inflate it on the ground, and was unable participate in this year’s competiBALLOON FEST cont. on page 5 Seventh Grade Collecting Animals for Hope Alliance The Snowcrest seventh grade class is involved in a project, sure to bring a smile to children’s faces throughout Utah and around the world, which will place stuffed animals in the arms of children who are involved in traumatic events. The 7th grade is collecting stuffed animals for Hope Alliance, a group that collects teddy bears and stuffed animals, and then distributes them to the Utah Highway Patrol and to Utah ambulances for children who have been hurt, or are involved in crisis situations. Hope Alliance also sends stuffed animals with doctors from SCL to be given to orphaned children in third world countries after they receive medical treatment, such as corrective surgery. Please send new, or gently used, donations to Snowcrest. Hope Alliance does no mending, so make sure your gift is in good repair. Donations will be accepted until October 25. Final collection will be at the school’s Halloween Dance. With the eighth fastest time in the nation in the 1600 meter race (4 min. 08 sec.), the very name of Steve Shepherd strikes fear in the hearts of his competitors. If you have ever seen him run, you Steve Shepherd know exactly what I am referring to. He is only the second athlete in Utah to ever run the 1600 meter race with such an impressive time.
