In December and January of that winter Jefferson was in Salt Lake, serving as representative from Weber County. He had been elected to the legislature the previous September. In 1864 Jefferson Hunt started a grist mill on Spring Creek. This was the only grist mill ever built in Ogden Valley. A number of Scandinavians settled in Huntsville this year, with them a good blacksmith, a blessing to any community. End Note: Jefferson Hunt later moved his family to Red Rock Pass in order to obtain larger tracts of property on which to ranch and run a freight business near the old freight road nine miles north of Oxford, Idaho. This is where he was later buried after his death in 1879. Because of Jefferson Hunt’s service in the Mexican War, the U.S. War Department placed a granite headstone on his grave in 1951. These totals compare to gains averaging 38,000 new jobs annually during the 1994-2000 period and a net loss of 1,300 jobs in 2001 through 2003. Stronger job gains, leading to better income creation and stronger retail spending, have a positive impact upon Utah’s small businesses . . .and therefore, the Index. The Zions Bank Small Business Index for Utah was 104.9 during April 2007, up from a revised 104.5 during March 2007. The Index measures business conditions from the viewpoint of the Utah small business owner or manager. A higher Index number is associated with more favorable business “conditions” for Utah’s small businesses. The Index uses 100.0 for calendar year 1997 as its base year. The Index includes revisions to various historical and new forecast components as they become available. Local Performance Weber County experienced job growth of 2,700 jobs (2.9%) from a year ago. Joblessness registered 2.8%, down from the 3.6% unemployment rate one year ago. Davis County payrolls expanded by 3,000 jobs (3.1%) in the past year. The unemployment rate was 2.5% in the latest month, down from 3.1% one year ago. Cache County employment grew by 1,600 jobs (3.3%) in the latest 12-month period. The area’s jobless rate was 1.9%, down from the 2.6% rate of one year ago. Salt Lake County employment rose by 24,800 jobs (4.4%) over the year. The county’s unemployment rate fell to 2.4% in the latest month, down from 3.1% last year. Utah County employment grew by 9,500 jobs (5.4%) over the last 12 months. The area’s jobless rate was 2.2%, down from the 2.9% rate of one year ago Washington County payrolls expanded by 2,800 jobs (5.5%) in the past year. The Rock Knoll by his descendant in 1950. Charles Jefferson Hunt served in the Mormon Battalion as Captain of Company “A” and as Assistant Executive Officer in its historic march from Council Bluffs, Iowa, to San Diego, California, 1846-47. His service won the commendation of all who served with him. Under appointment by President Brigham Young in 1851, Capt. Hunt was guide for the pioneers to San Bernardino, California. His pioneering service included also Provo, Parowan and Huntsville, (which bears his name) in Utah, and Oxford, Idaho. A convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, he was loyal and obedient and faithful to the end. Erected by Descendants of Capt. Hunt and the Utah Pioneer Trails and Landmarks Assn. unemployment rate was 2.4% in the latest month, down from 2.9% one year ago. National Employment The U.S. Department of Labor reported a net gain of 88,000 jobs in April 2007, slightly below expectations and the weakest gain in 29 months. In addition, combined February and March employment gains were revised lower by 26,000 jobs. The U.S. unemployment rate was 4.5% in April, up from March’s 4.4% rate. March’s 4.4% jobless rate matched that of October 2006 as the lowest in more than five years. The average hourly wage rose 0.2% (four cents) to $17.25 hourly, a rise of 3.7% over the past 12 months . . . versus the smaller rise in consumer prices over the same period. Goods-producing employment declined in April, with a net loss of 28,000 jobs. Construction employment declined by 11,000 jobs in April, while manufacturing employment fell by 19,000 positions. Service-providing employment led the way in April with a rise of 116,000 net new jobs. The education & health services sector added 53,000 positions. Government added 25,000 net new jobs in April, while the professional and business services sector added 24,000 jobs. The leisure and hospitality sector added 22,000 jobs, while the retail trade sector lost 26,000 jobs. The U.S. economy added an average of 129,000 net new jobs monthly in 2007’s first four months, down 43% from the 225,000 average pace of 2006’s first four months. The 2.26 million rise in net new jobs in 2006 roughly matched gains averaging 2.30 million jobs annually in 2004 and 2005.
