Show Page The Ogden Valley news Volume XVII Issue XII December 1, 2009 Holiday Open House @ Your Library Adopt a Family This Christmas Your Community Connection (YCC) is looking for community members to become involved in the “Spirit of Giving” Program and sponsor a family in need. This program needs generous members from the community to provide Christmas to families who would otherwise not be visited by Santa Clause this holiday season. To sponsor a family, please call Kelsey at (801) 689-1706. YCC is a community-based, volunteerdriven, non-profit organization serving the Northern Utah community since 1945. Our mission is to provide comprehensive services to support and enhance the quality of life for all women, children, and families. Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas Weber State University Alumni Association presents the WSU Alumni Singers, directed by Evelyn Harris, in concert, “With Gladness, Cheer and Song,” Monday, December 14, 6:30 and 8:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church at 28th and Quincy in Ogden. This is a free performance but donations of food and money will be gratefully accepted to assist local Sub for Santa families in need. The WSU Alumni Singers will be presenting a concert for the entire family, including favorites such as “Joy to the World,” “Silent Night,” “Calypso Lullaby,” “Coming Home for Christmas,” and “I Wish You Christmas.” There will be special numbers from various members of the group in small ensembles and as soloists. Evelyn said she is grateful to be doing what she does. “I work with a terrific group of people that love to sing and the music we are doing is such a pleasure to perform. This is a beautiful concert but it is all for the benefit of other people. It is a thrill to be able to help people at Christmas and share the joy!” Weber State Singers was an active performing group at Weber State University, with Evelyn Harris directing the group for seventeen years. When she retired they also retired the group, which was then without a director. The members had a strong desire to keep the Singers alive and did so through the auspices of the WSU Alumni Office. The current group is comprised of former WSU Singers as well as Evelyn Harris’ vocal students. For more information about the WSU Alumni Singers, contact Evelyn Harris, 801392-3773 or <evieh7@comcast.net> Paintings by Roberta Glidden @ the Ogden Valley Branch Library An art exhibition featuring works by Roberta Glidden will be on display in the Lorna Wattis Swanson Gallery of the Ogden Valley Branch Library, 131 S. 7400 E. in Huntsville. She divides her time between her home/ studio in Ogden, Utah and Jackson, Wyoming where she can be found outdoors painting the Tetons en plein air. She hosts a weekly portrait group at her studio and regularly attends a figure group at nearby Weber State University. She is an active member of the local Palette Club. Roberta has exhibited several times at the Eccles Art Center Statewide Competition in Ogden. Big Band Holiday Dance Slated at WSU’s Shepherd Union Building Ballroom The sixteen piece Junction City Big Band, directed by Dr. Earl Ericksen, presents their holiday Dance Date Friday, December 11 in the Shepherd Union Building Ballroom at Weber State University. Downbeat is at 8:30 p.m. but for those who need it, professional dance instruction by Margene Anderson of DanceScene will be offered at 7:15 for $1 per person. Featured on this program will be vocalist Ruth Stevenson. Expect to hear some Big Band versions of famous songs for the holidays at this dance. Bring your special dance partner and celebrate the holidays by dancing with your arms around each other. Ruth Jensen Stevenson moved to Ogden from Memphis Tennessee and is honored to be singing with Dr. Earl Erickson and the Junction City Big Band. Originating from the Seattle area, she graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in NYC and credits her background in acting for her ability to connect with songs she sings. She especially loves singing with Big Bands in a dance atmosphere. “I grew up watching classic black and white movies where singers sang with Big Bands and often felt I had been born too late. Something magical happens when you combine people who love to dance with an exceptional Big Band who loves to play!” While in Memphis, Ruth sang as vocalist for the Memphis Knights Big Band as well as other bands and small combos. Her musi- cal background is wide and varied, which includes playing classical/jazz flute, singing with a professional vocal ensemble concert series, professional and community musical theatre, and singing in a rock band that covered top 40 tunes for church dances. She is married to David Stevenson, a multi-talented attorney who also plays trombone in the Junction City Big Band. The band was organized in 1987 under the direction of Dr. K. Earl Ericksen, then chair of the Weber State Department of Performing Arts. The Swing Era style dance band was formed specifically to give local musicians with big band experience an opportunity to continue playing for personal enjoyment as well as for community functions. Donating their time and musical skills, they have helped to keep the community “jumpin’” with the music of Glen Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Sammy Kay, Freddie Martin, Harry James and other great swing era sounds. Lessons begin at 7:15 p.m. with the dance downbeat at 8:30 p.m. Best dress is recommended, which includes shirt and tie for men. Tickets are $7.00 at the door. There is a $1.00 per person charge for the one hour dance lessons. Lessons will begin promptly at 7:15. No one will be admitted to the lessons after that time so please make plans to come early and be included in this fun and fantastic experience.
