Eight national merit scholar semifinalists in the class of 2005 According to statistics, a school the size of Judge Memorial Catholic High School in Salt Lake City should be home to one National Merit Scholar each year. Yet six of the seven Judge Semifinalists from the class of 2004 earned the title of National Merit Scholar; and this year eight Semifinalists will embark on the six-month process of earning the prestigious Scholarships. Finalists will be announced in February 2005. Scholarship winners will be announced beginning in March 2005. The Judge Memorial National Merit Scholar Semifinalists are: Bryan Allen, Sarah Ashburn, Siara Dean, Heidi Jones, Maya Karwande, David Klock, Mary Murray and Peter Pincetl. David is the son of Paula Wooks Imai and Gerry Imai of Eden. The 16,000 nationwide semifinalists who have qualified to continue in the competition for Merit Scholarship awards to be offered in 2005 have been designated from 1.3 million National Merit Program entrants in nearly 21,000 high schools nationwide. Students entered the competition by taking the 2003 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which is used by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) as an initial screen of entrants. Representing less than one percent of each state’s high school seniors, semifinalists are the highest-scoring program entrants in each state, and they are the only participants who have an opportunity to advance in the competition for Merit Scholarship awards to be offered next spring. To advance, they must meet additional standards and requirements. Finalists will vie for one of three types of scholarship awards: National Merit $2500 Scholarships, Corporate-sponsored_ scholarships (ranging from $500 to $10,000 per year), or college-sponsored scholarships (ranging from $500 to $2000 per year). The National Merit Scholarship Corporation The NMSC is a not-for-profit organization that operates without government assistance. The corporation was established in 1955 to conduct the National Merit Scholarship Program, an annual academic competition for recognition and scholarships open to all U.S. high school students who meet published entry requirements. The semifinalists named in each year’s Merit Scholarship competition show exceptional academic ability and potential for success in rigorous college studies. Those who meet requirements to advance to the finalist level then compete for Merit Scholarship awards; currently, about half the outstanding finalists are chosen as award recipients and honored as Merit Scholar designees. The Merit Scholarship awards that they receive are supported by independent sponsor organizations and by NMSC’s own funds. Judge Memorial Catholic High School Judge Memorial Catholic High School is a private, Catholic high school in downtown Salt Lake City. Since 1921, the school’s teachers, administrators, staff, and students have worked to establish a tradition of distinction in all pursuits: academic, athletic, artistic, and altruistic. Judge students are ethnically, economically, and academically diverse. Because of the school’s urban setting and its resolve to provide tuition assistance to all students who need it, the ethnic and socio-economic multiplicity of the student body is unparalleled by any other private school in Utah.
